We need a 7 seater. We would love an Smax as it seems to be the best one going but can't afford it, what's the next best car?

    What is the budget roughly?

Mazda 5. Sliding doors are the job and its one of nicest cars to drive. I found the fords and VW's to be overpriced for what you get.

Do you definitely need 7 seats?

If 6 would do, look at a Honda FRV.

Great thanks, will check out those two cars. 6 seats might do

    The S-Max isn't a full 7 seater, it's a 5+2 little seats.

The best MPV after an S-Max is a slightly older S-Max.

We have one, but I wouldn't really see it fit as being used as a 7 seater. The middle seat in the second row is useless, and couldn't fit my wife (who is a petite 5 ft / 6.5 stone), , especially not if any Child Seats are involved.

In which case an S-Max will be of no advantage at all.

    Secondhand Galaxy is better.

The older ones have bigger seats? Before what year are they better?

No, all S-Maxxeses are the same.

I just meant if you can't afford one, go a year or two older.

If you can't afford a 2006 S-Max, you're really asking what was the best MPV 10 years ago, a different question, and I don't know the answer to that one.

What is your budget? How old/what mileage will you put up with?

The Galaxy is a great car if you need to fit more then 5 in as all the seats are full size .

FYI, the seats in the Galaxy and Smax are the very same, the Galaxy has slightly more head and leg room in the back but they both share the same seats.

Oh and to answer your initial question, if you cant stretch to an Smax I would go for a Seat Alhambra/ VW Sharan/Ford Galaxy (Any of these as there are more or less the same bar the badges)

No, the back seats in the S-Max are only little.

After looking at all the cars, think I actually might have found an older s max after all! I heard that before alright that the seats in smax were the same as galaxy but the roof was higher in galaxy. I think the galaxy seems too much like a van for me - I would be worried for finding parking etc

Have had my smax for over 6 months now and love it! so roomy and comfortable for the kids. Great for fitting the car seats and closing the belts. Diesel lasts for ages in it. Thanks again to everyone for the advice. It anyone else is looking for a family car I would definitely recommend it :)

Our 08 just passed 285,000 km, and I still think it is a brilliant family car.

Don't slag but the best value for money 7 seater is the Chrysler Grand Voyager. Quite cheap for the year, better specked than rivals, nicer seats & the 2.5 diesel is a good reliable engine. Seriously, look them up in Donedeal

didn't like the interior of any of the people carriers TBH found them all fairly basic, saw a titanium X Sport S-max online, they are lovely, bought one, 163bhp to boot so it goes! not many in ireland, most s-max's are paddy spec.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,686 ✭✭✭✭Zubeneschamali

    most s-max's are paddy spec.

It's a big machine, and Ford aren't shy about charging for them. You won't get any change out of €40K for a reasonable one new here, which is a lot of cash, and buying an MPV is pretty dispiriting already. €50K on a Titanium X etc. new would be very hard to do.

I can see why someone who must have a big practical bus might go for a Paddy spec S-max instead of some fully loaded crapbox.
