Mitsubishi Carisma immobiliser issue

Hi guys hope you might be able to help me out.
I have a customers 2002 carisma with the 4G13 1.3 petrol engine. Car is a non runner, cranks over but no start. The fuel pump relay isn't being grounded by the PCM and there is a fault code pertaining to the immobiliser (P1610).
I advised the customer to bring it to a Mitsubishi dealer who would have the diagnostic capability to check whether the immobilser ECU is at fault or at least whether the transponder in the key is ok. They have had it for two days and finally came back saying they suspect the immobilser ECU is faulty, but that they couldn't guarantee it would fix the problem if it was replaced and recoded. My customer isn't sure how to proceed and I have exhausted my diagnostic ability.
Has anyone had any experience with this or could advise any tests I could do to confirm 100% that it is this immobilser module that is faulty? Or has anyone out there got dealer level hardware and fancy taking the job on? Many thanks

Would you not consider removing the ecu and send it off to be tested.
