    Hi,

Heading to NY on my todd at the end of August for 2 weeks, it will be my first time in the States.

Where would the best area/place to stay be, i would like to see the sights, maybe get tix for madison square garden if something is on such as a gig or basketball etc Also, i am big into music and film, so would like to check out some areas and good stores, think Beastie boys (Pauls boutique) and coney island (the warriors film), Hells kitchen etc etc, so i want to visit such places, i know this may come across weird but ya know, it's what i am into ha

Is 2 weeks too long in NY? I was thinking of heading to New orleans for a week if 2 weeks is overkill in NY!!

Also, is it wise to go on my own or will it be boring!! How much would you bring for 2 weeks? I was think $5k spending money?

    Any info appreciated

NYC in August is Hot as Hell...though not as Hot as New Orleans will be...are you tied to those dates?

I wouldn't do two weeks in urban New York, a week max. Much as I love it, too long and it won't feel like a holiday. Maybe consider doing some time in upstate New York...it will be slightly cooler and some nice things to see and do. You may need a car up there though.

What is todd? 2 weeks is not too long! You could spend months in NYC and still not cover everything. Amazing city. 5k spending money you should be fine with as long as you keep it simple, nothing flash.

One part of NYC people forget to check out is Grenwich village. Be sure to check it out.

    Have fun!

Thanks. Yeah i have booked the dates off for holidays, would be difficult to change them.
I lived in Asia for 2 years so the heat whilst somewhat uncomfortable, should be grand. I have no clue really, just always wanted to go to the States, particularly NY due to the music and films etc. I was also thinking of just going to florida or something. I am not one for research, which is probably stupid, i prefer to just book something and wander around. So NY in August is not ideal or.....? Where would you go in the states around that time? Just curious

Maybe Seattle? Somewhere on the West Coast definitely. Bear in mind it's hurricane season for the East Coast/Southern States.

I love New York, have been there many many times but IMO April/May and September/October are the best times to visit.

For a trip you're spending this much money on you really do need to do your research. All major US destinations have their own boards on Tripadvisor, it's a great place to start.

I lived in NYC for a year. Great city. Yeah it's hot in August but just bring light clothing. You can catch a train to Long Beach in an hour or so if you want to get out of the city. Upstate new York is beautiful too but like me, you might not want to leave the city :)

As for what to do/ where to stay, do all on your list but I just found that NYC is a place that you could just spend time walking around the various neighbourhoods or hopping on and off the subway and you just stumble upon the most interesting things and buildings.

I found midtown great to see (Central Park, empire state building, the public library, Bryant park etc.) And Upper east side was fascinating to walk around, all the old tall skyscrapers! But i preferred downtown by far and spent more time there, so maybe do a week midtown and a week downtown

. You can catch the Staten island ferry for free and see all lower Manhattan and statue of liberty on the way. Take it at nighttime to see all the lights. You should also walk the Brooklyn Bridge over to Dumbo and get an ice cream! Great views! Wall street is a must on a weekday too, crazy stuff - That whole area is a great mix of old and new New York.

For shopping, Soho/Broadway has most shops all beside each other and for bars/ live music, you should check out lower east side/ east village. Food and drink is better value for money than midtown.

People are very friendly too :) Enjoy

If you dont mind the heat you cant go wrong with New Orleans. I think after NYC its one of my favourite US cities, its really unlike anywhere else. And you dont need a car to get around either.

Even though you can go to Las Vegas and not gamble, you still have to like gambling because the place is built around it.

And It will be searingly hot, although not the humid heat of New Orleans.

We're going to be there in two weeks, my gf has family there. 3/4 days is about my limit.

If you're into music and socializing etc. you should stay downtown - probably the East Village will be best for you. Nearly all of the best restaurants and bars, cafes, etc. are downtown.

Most gigs and live music is now concentrated in Williamsburg in Brooklyn as venues have been priced out of Manhattan. You can get to williamsburg from the East Village in 10 minutes on the L train.

Two weeks isn't too long, there are tons of things to do in NYC in the summer: free concerts in Prospect Park and Central Park, Coney Island and Rockaway beach, Governors Island (tons of events on there), concerts at South Street Seaport etc. You should also do a baseball game, personally I'd recommend the Mets.

Overall the vibe in NYC in the summer is great, people are happy and out and about enjoying themselves, I wouldn't let the weather stop you. You could also do a side trip up the Hudson Valley or to somewhere like Martha's Vineyard if you have the inclination.

+ to going to the Mets I went to a Yankiees game and found it full of tourists and people who were not very passionate. Then took the 7 train out to the mets and was blown away by being amougst the real New Yorkers and how passionate they were. Going back on the train into the city from a mets game reminds me of taking a train from a GAA or Soccer game at home the same kind of craic and slagging goes on the met fans are always up for a good time. That was one of my reasons why I am moving to NYC at the end of next month.

Others were talking about Vegas well you dont have to go that far to have the same kind of casinos that are in vegas. Atlantic City is 90 mins to 2 hours by bus down the road. You can catch a bus from the port authority bus station at 42nd street and 8th Ave.

Also Philladelipa is 2 hours by bus from NYC can do a nice little day trip down there and see the liberty bell and a whole host of other cool stuff.

NYC is a great place and you wont be board.
