S40 and Focus (and Citroens C4/C5 Peugeot 308/407 Mazda3 for that matter) all share the same 1.6 diesel. VWs 1.6 is a different unit (also found in Skodas, Seats and maybe the occasional Audi)

I drive a 2010 Focus, which I am currently about to upgrade, and I find it an excellent car.

Drives well, handles well and economical.

As said above there is a 1.6 Psa / hdi / tdci Peugeot engine which is fitted in the s40, focus any French stuff. Then there is a 1.6 tdi volkswagen engine which is fitted to any Volkswagen Audi group cars. The volkswagen engine is superior when it comes to reliability IMO anyway they cause very little trouble. The same can't be said for the Psa engine hit and miss at best. I bought a bad one (focus 1.6tdci) and it cost me a fortune to keep on the road and left me stranded a few times sold it and got a golf 1.9tdi which I way prefer.

Your biggest issue is you won't get a decent 1.6tdi mark 6 golf for 9500 as you would have to go 2010 to get the 1.6tdi vw engine. So I would recommend a mk5 golf 1.9tdi 2008 within budget, very reliable and still cheap tax. If you go down the 1.6 Psa engine route it will be pure luck might not cause any trouble or will absolutely wreck your head with problems I wouldn't every buy one again.

Post 2007 diesel cars are taxed based on co2 emissions meaning most are cheap to tax. It's very Irish to limit one's self to small capacity diesel engines. My 2.0 litre diesel only costs €270 to tax.

Check out the kia cee'd and Hyundai i30 too. Both come with a 1.6 crdi Hyundai unit and it's a decent and reliable engine.

To be fair I think most engines are decent and reliable.

Remember that the 1.6TDCI in the Focus, the Volvo and the French cars is a MASSIVE seller. There are an awful lot of them out there in IReland, the UK, Europe.

If they were as terrible as some would have you believe, so many of them wouldn't have been sold.

Every engine will have it amount of bad ones.

1.6 PSA group engines are known to have turbo issue's if they are not serviced regularly.. As I discovered when my 2nd hand pug 307sw went poop one day. Its such a common issue that when I rang a pug main dealer the receptionist put me through to "the turbo guy"...
My local garage had 4 ( 2 fords,a Volvo and my pug) all in at the same time with the same seized turbos.
I'd listen to the lads above and not limit yourself to a small diesel.

    Not necessarily.

I think with the amount of RD and improvement in ICE technology over the years, if an engine is well maintained and serviced, the majority will not give any major problems.

To just make a blanket statement that one single engine that is in hundreds of thousands of cars is rubbish and bound to fail, is a little OTT.

    Again not necessarily.

It could also be said that your it's a good seller so it must be good argument "is a little ott"

Anyway who made a "blanket statement"?

I have heard that the psa's can give trouble if not properly maintained but that's what you get for not looking after your car. Ill look into something a bit beefier on the golf range lower down the years too, thanks

    Shhhhhhh....you're ruining his sly shill:pac:

OP, I'd probably look at a Civic 2.2 or Golf 2 litre. You're not going to be penalised on motor tax with either and they are infinitely better than the 1.6's most people buy.

But you won't be buying a mk6 golf for 9.5 k euro though which is I assume the model you are referring too when talking about the 1.6 tdi. The civic is a good suggestion. Anyone I know who has one with that engine seems to have little trouble with them and really like them.

They sold early 2009/2010 MkVI Golfs with a detuned 2.0 CR TDi engine (110bhp). It was a stop gap until the 1.6 TDi arrived. Only 5 speed though.
For €9500 you will be looking at a 100k+ miles example.

You say you are considering a diesel for the lower tax, but really how much does that save you? work it out, pen and paper or excel, between a potential petrol and diesel engined car.
If you are not doing the mileage, Id go for a petrol, although Id say go for the car and engine based on your needs rather than just the tax, if in the end it turns out a diesel is whats required then the lower tax is just a bonus. Maybe then you wouldnt have to limit yourself from set year to get a cheaply taxable diesel and could go for an older petrol.

Here's an English Golf MK6 that comes in at around 2500 to VRT putting it around 9K total:

    They can be gotten alright.

    Already VRT'd:
