Hi there. My husband has been claiming job seekers benefit as his work hours were cut. It's run out and they say we not entitled to job seekers allowance.. I only work part time so can I apply.. Or is the fact that he had been getting it gonna reflect on my application.. Anyone with advice be brilliant can't afford to be down another €300 a month..

Yes you could apply for it for both of you. What reason did they give that your husband doesn't qualify?

I made my claim for jobseekers allowance on the first day of June, I provided all the documents they needed and I've been to all the appointments but there's no sign of getting anything. I've got a job lined up in August and I'll have to move to Dublin for it, I was planning to save up the JSA so I could move but now I'm worried I wont get it in time or that I wont get anything in which case I'll have to turn down the job.

Does it usually take this long?

It shouldn't take this long. Your file may have been referred to a Social Welfare Inspector but that could be for a number of reasons. I'd say your best bet is to go into your Local Office and enquire as to what the situation is and explain your predicament. They should, at the very least, be able to give you an approximation of how long more you can expect to wait.

I can't see how it would make any difference which of you applied, he was means tested I presume on total household income so that will just be the same again. Have you checked if you qualify for Family Income Supplement? Call into your local Citizens Information office to see if they could advise you on anything you may be entitled to.

If he isnt happy with the means test he can appeal it. If it has been refused on means then there is no point in you applying as the same means would apply to your claim. Or as Phormium has advised you can apply for Family Income Supplement once once of you is working >19 hrs per week. http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/275_Family-Income-Supplement.aspx
