Turning down a job offer

    Hi all,

Hope someone can help me here. I have been offered a job close to where I am from. Now I've been looking for roles close to home for a long time.
Recently an opportunity came up, I interviewed and was offered the job.

However, ever since I interviewed and got the role, something hasn't felt right. The money is slightly less than what I am currently and I recently spoke to the hiring manager and it sounds like its going to be painful. I have a sneaky suspicion that I will be stressed out in this role.

My current job is great. Excellent package, very laid back and lots of travel (which I enjoy).

I would be happy to stay in this role forever except I have wanted to move close to home for some time (due to financial and family reasons).

Now it seems the current company will give me a significant pay rise and bonus if I stay.

My question is 1) if I were to go back to the new company (due to start in a couple of weeks) and say I am declining reasons being that I don't get a good feel for the role and don't feel I will be successful will that look bad?
    2) Am I mad to give up a great job for the sake of being closer to home?

    Any advice welcome,
    Thanks,
    A

    1) No. They want someone who'll stick around - and honesty is a great card to play. They will have a no.2 in the wings.
    2) Yes on info given. Only you really know this.

Gut instinct works well. Only you know the family reasons part of this. But on the information given that's my immediate reaction.

    Hi there,

What I tend to advise when big decisions are involved is to do a comprehensive list of pros and cons. In this instance it is obvious you enjoy your current job. Do you enjoy your current life? Has - in your own words - what appears to be a very comfortable job in every sense skewed your opinion of the new position? Maybe it's not so bad but, having had a job that you could stay in for the rest of your life, you're a bit daunted by a new challenge.

Family reasons are a big draw home. Will they compensate for a job you may not love as much as your current position? Will the financial reasons improve on a slightly lower salary?

I'm posing questions but only you know your life. Only you can value the benefits you'll gain by taking the position against any possible losses. It will be hard to leave what appears to be your dream job in everything but location but if you've been looking a long time, the chance may not present itself again.

    Best of luck.

Thanks for the responses so far. Thanks for this peanut.
It was always a pipe dream to move closer to home but the reality is that I don't see my life there permanently...
Cost of living will be a bit cheaper and you're right will being close to home compensate for a job I won't exactly love.
I once left a high paying/cushy job for stress and I hated it. I'm terrified that is going to happen here again. The fact of having the chance to move now is throwing up different issues I never thought of.
I've a good thing going here and I feel I am going to be making a massive mistake.
