Aviva car insurance renewal, be careful!

Got my renewal in the post from Aviva on Monday - €789 (up from around €420 last year). Thought "that can't be right" and called them. They had my wife down as my "parent" rather than my "partner" which is a computer glitch according to the guy I spoke to. (Would be a good trick though seeing as I'm older than her).

Changing her back to "partner" dropped the premium down a couple of hundred, and the usual extra 10% discretionary discount I always have to call for was also applied. So down to €495 then.

Talking to herself, my wife - not my mother :), she was asking was the 25% Multicar discount applied (she also has car insurance with Aviva) and it turns out it was not. I wrongly assumed their system would have automatically added it seeing as we both have policies, obviously not. Rang them again today and got that applied also.

So from €789 to €391 with a couple of phone calls. I know most on here would ring around, but for those who don't bother and just renew online or whatever, even if you don't ring competing companies, make sure you read all your documents and ensure everything is in order, just in case you are being overcharged. Computers are only as good as the information put into them by humans, and insurance companies seem happy to make consumers do the work for them. I wonder would the partner/parent thing have even been fixed had I just accepted the quote and renewed online? I know I would not have got the other 10% discount and the Multicar discount for sure.

I would encourage you to get a quote from one other company just for comparissons sake.
It saves me hundreds every year.

I was with Quinn or Liberty for 8 years. It went up a couple of years back but I stuck with them because my family is from Cavan and they were going through some rough times.

It went up again this year though so I rang around and got quoted by Alianz 230 euro cheaper and with better extras.

The sense I get is that once you stick with an insurer it goes up and up, then you move and you get a better deal elsewhere until you stick around for awhile. I'll probably get a better price next year with Liberty.. who knows.

I just changed my car and got my renewal with Axa... They wanted €516, up from €400 last year. Gave them a ring and got it down to €313. Didn't even bother ringing anyone else! Been with them for the last 3 or 4 years and always deal with the local branch rather than the national number.
