Just saw this article in the Irish Times

This will affect 3-series models produced between May 1999 and August 2006. In typical fashion, my car falls into this bracket. So how do I know if mine is one of those affected, and how does this recall process work?

Ring your nearest dealer and give them the VIN number, they'll tell you if there's a recall. If there is a recall it will be done free of charge at any dealer. They replaced a steering column on an E36 for me that was 10 years old as a recall.

    Oh fantastic :pac:

Thanks for the heads up dudara!

I'll follow up with the dealer - wonder if they'll fix my gammy central locking (GM5 module issues) too? :)

    Mine worked fine anyway :pac:

Really kept of the radar of the general media today, Toyota must be an easier target.

E46 and early E90 models going by the description, but giving the E46 coupe still ran until 2006, it could very well be E46 cars only.

Contact dealer with reg and/or VIN number.

It's GM turn today (pretty shocking stuff tbh)

Service dept. saying letters will be sent out within the next 3-4 weeks for any affected vehicles. By the looks of it, the next week will be them organising their own paperwork. If you haven't heard anything by then, ring your nearest dealer.

if its like the letters Toyota send out ,contact will depend on 1st owner filling in "sold to" section and notifying BMW accordingly in my opinion . got a recall letter from toyota and a section in it asks owner to fill out if car sold on,giving name of new owner or garage . IMO some will end up in bin, in that case if 2nd owner and hearing nothing i would write(reg mail) to BMW head office in Dublin or wherever and keep record of it.

irish examiner had section on the case ,about 2-3 weeks ago , only that issue focused on the treatment of the whistle blower involved - its worth reading,re how corporate's legal systems treat vital information and keep it out of public domain regardless of importance

I'm pretty sure Toyota had access to the driver database of each car registered when they sent those letters out.

yes they did. When it is a matter of a recall, the dept of transport can give the details of vehicle owners to a third party.

    not contradicting your general point
in recall i got it specifically asks for details - new owner or garage .imo reading that to me suggests if car traded privately or non-dealer garage unless taken into Toyota Dealer for repairs or parts will not get onto Toyota Computer system. when you get parts or service in Toyota Main Dealership any where you reg is entered into system along with details. a number of people i know buying S-H never go into dealership .i told a toyota owner about recall and he has not been notified yet, so imo forms had not been filled and returned just binned probably.same model, same year, same fitting.just required checking

if car owners had to rely on people using main dealers for servicing to get cars examined in a recall then toyotas latest recall which is on cars between 2000 and 2004 would not have a very high response rate

Interesting how BMW will recall their cars effected by a suppliers faulty item. I bet you the supplier is part funding the recall. Yet when it is a fault with one of their own components (timing chain) they say nothing.

Interesting that when toyota and honda did their airbag recalls a year ago bmw didnt.

I suspect that since this is a safety issue they are a lot keener to get it done, rather than a mechanical one.

Interesting that when toyota and honda did their airbag recalls a year ago bmw didnt.

Could be something as simple as Takata not informing manufacturers, trying to save some money, or just not knowing the extent of the issue at the time. They're already taking a huge hit from it though.

    http://www.therakyatpost.com/business/2014/07/18/takata-earnings-hit-worldwide-airbag-recalls/
Takata Corp said today it would book a special loss of around ¥45 billion (RM1.41 billion) in the April-June quarter after several car makers recently recalled vehicles due to potential problems with its airbags.
Automakers including Honda Motor Co, Toyota Motor Corp and BMW have said they were recalling vehicles to fix Takata-made airbags that could explode and shoot out shrapnel.

The cost of the latest recalls, announced in June and July, could increase if a safety investigation in the US finds evidence that driving in high humidity increases the risk of the airbags exploding, or if car makers decide to expand the recalls beyond certain US regions.
Takata said it is still studying the impact of the special loss on its full-year forecast. The company currently expects to post ¥16 billion in net profit for the year ending in March 2015.

In the year to March 2013, Takata took a US$300 million (RM954.35 million) charge and posted a record ¥21.1 billion net loss after car makers recalled four million vehicles worldwide over passenger-side airbags.
Takata shares have dropped nearly 15% over the last month, after car makers started to announce the most recent round of recalls.
More than 12 million vehicles have been recalled over the last five years by multiple automakers due to potential problems with Takata airbags.

recall is actually on the 2008 model avensis fitted with hitch.
all this coming from US would make you wonder why GM where not hauled over coals in view of exposure of whisleblower court cases about 6 years ago when he discoverd faulty ignition allegedly. toyota always featured in recalls ,whether they did it off own bat to improve image as opposed to latest GM publicity seems to indicate the legal system in US seems to hide rather than expose their own manufacturers faults while ensuring max publicity for others glitches i.m.o., did they not hold a congressional type hearing into toyota recalls a few years back

No, since I got the car
there was a recall on power steering i had done in 2012
there was a recall on the airbag and towbar which i had done together in august 2013
and now the airbag again, which i am having done next week.
Details of this recall are here http://www.consumerhelp.ie/index.jsp?p=103&n=127&a=1202

Have to agree with you on the media worldwide targeting some manufacturers in terms of bad press.

Did anyone get a recall letter in the post yet for your car recall?

    I haven't.

Should I ring local dealer to make appointment to replace airbag or must I wait for the letter in the post?

Rang dealer a couple of weeks ago. They said not all cars affected and BMW hadn't told them which cars are affected. Took my reg said they'd be in touch. No word since.

I rang my local dealer and he told me too that not all E46s are affected.

He told me BMW will be sending out letters to affected people.

So he told me to wait for the letter in the post and then ring him.

3 months later I've gotten a text this morning saying I need to drop my car in for a safety recall.

Anyone else had any updates on theirs?

I understand the first batch of letters will be sent to owners next week/early following week. Most likely later cars called back first. All dealers currently carrying out the recall for customers who make contact at the moment regardless of year of registration.
