I have been thinking of doing the Stena Line 5 euro return for myself and my other half for a while and just want peoples honest opinions on the place. From what I can see downtown Holyhead looks very depressing. Was hoping to get off the ferry do a little shopping then get back on but there does not seem to be much there these days. Its been about 10 years since I was in downtown Holyhead and there used to be a woolworths there but thats gone bust. Is it woth going or would going up north be a better use of a day?

If you are suicidal and need motivation to end it the hollyhead is the place for ya ...

An absolute desolate run down kip that's the land of the damned

I echo the previous post. I only go to Holyhead, only to be picked up by my aunt and go to North Wales. But if you wanted to do some shopping, you could go to Bangor. But all there is is the likes of Tesco Extra and PC World, Comet.

Wish they would give longer to actually go to Bangor as it is its under 2 hours on that fare so Holyhead would be the only option. Having looked at google street maps the place looks very run down since I was last there.

Not only is it a kip, the locals are generally a bunch of tossers who go out of their way to be rude to the Irish. Be grand for a couple of hours, but nothing of note to see or do.

Love the slang! Since I'm not from around these parts I had to look it up :)

What's your meaning of "kip"? You're not suggesting that Holyhead is the hide of a small beast, a unit of currency in Laos, or a brothel are you? ;) The free dictionary must be missing your exact meaning...

It comes from the danish "kippe," "cheap inn." Refers to somewhere you wouldn't want to stay in.

A few years ago, a ferry delay meant I had some time to kill in Holyhead so I texted a friend in the trucking game as to where might be the best place to get a reasonable meal. He said the McDonalds. He wasn't joking.

It's just a typical remote port town with an island mentality. There's very little there really.

There are lovely spots elsewhere in North Wales though. Please don't base your opinions of the place on Holyhead.

Echoing sentiments that the town itself is a dinge-hole, but if you can bring - or otherwise acquire - a bike, the coastline just outside the town is very scenic, with decent-looking walking paths, cliffs and the like. Might even be doable by foot. I had an hour or two with car waiting for ferry and took a spin to South Stack and was well impressed.

Holyhead is a place to drive through on the way to some were else,
€5 on the boat isn't bad , the kids love the boat, but hope for a smooth crossing,
not much fun for adults then if it isn't, but this doesn't seem to affect kids.

Thanks for that, €10 return is great value on a Sunday. And the turn around is 2 hours so you don't have a chance to explore the majestic sunny seaside town of Holyhead.

If you want to spend longer id suggest booking the 5 pound deal on the .co.uk site for the next day makes it a cheap trip :)

You only get 2 hours in Hollyhead with that offer

    08.20 - Depart Dublin Port
    11.50 - Arrive Holyhead
    13.50 - Depart Holyhead
    17.05 - Arrive Dublin Port

You're basically paying €5/10 to be on a boat for 6 hours.

I used to go to Llanddudno as a kid too and I loved it. I had an afternoon to kill last summer, before I had to drive to Chester, so I spent it there for old times sake. The town is no longer the fun & rather unique place that I remembered form my childhood. It was full of your bog standard English chains store shops, chippers, grotty pubs and charity shops. I found it quite depressing to be honest.

The cable hour ride up the Great Orme was great & the views from the top are spectacular, but the queues for the cable car were really long. The sea front was lovely and there are some lovey old world traditional hotels there if you have a few bob to spend on your accommodation. The pier was great craic, full of your traditional English sea side stuff. Consider Chester if you want to see somewhere really beautiful. Avoid Hollyhead as a place to hang out in. Utter dump.

Just remember folks, the ferry docks, then it could take you half an hour to get unloaded and to the terminal. Then you have to check in again. You would be lucky if you had enough time to walk as far as the roundabout at the terminal. Then you would have to return.

I like Stena, but this offer is only suitable to get you onboard to spend on food and drink.

I agree, but it's not a bad day out for kids who have never been on a ferry before.

When they used to do the 'booze boats' (IR£10 return and you got a free litre of booze) in the 80s, we quite often didn't bother getting off in Holyhead and just came home, clutching our bottles.

Do they even let you stay on the ferry once docked in Holyhead. It might not be too bad then but if you have to queue up again to get back on it seems a waste of time.

It's not even like they have huge discount stores there to make it worth your while. I'd be spending my day heading up north instead.

They do let you off but I agree on the day trip I cant see myself getting enough time to go somewhere decent. Ill head to Belfast instead far far nicer city.
