Should the Wicklow National Park be expanded?

A thread on the Wicklow Forum this evening about a fire on Bray Head brought this subject back to mind once again. I have, for years, been alarmed by the encroachment of Bray town onto Bray Head, the poor security along the railway between Bray and Greystones which can't be good for the burgeoning sea bird colonies there, and the northward march of industrial Wicklow towards Broad Lough. In terms of land values, I would have thought that it's generally rather poor land for either agriculture or development, and should be compulsorily acquired by the State. Anybody else any thoughts on this? Please don't say the country's broke.

The existing Wicklow Mountains National Park (see map), while a good thing, is not that important as the areas it encompasses were not under threat due to their remoteness from population centres. It's indisputable that the areas I've mentioned are under severe pressure.

Murrough wetlands together with Broad Lough would make a fine national park.

At present there are no lowland wetland areas protected as a national park.

Couldn't agree more but every time I go past on the train the industrial zone seems to creeping ever closer to Broad Lough. I really thought that things like this would be done when the Greens were in Government but they were next to useless - especially John Gormley. :(

And I know that Booterstown Marsh isn't in Wicklow but it urgently needs to be taken in hand as well - so many unemployed and so many potential schemes that could be started upon at little additional public expenditure....

Gormley promised everything, but delivered nothing. Fine Gael led government are worse and i would not hold out much hope from those specimens.:(
Even the BWI reserve (East Coast Nature Reserve) in the Murrough Wetlands has sadly fallen into disrepair.
