Guinness Dilemma

I've just found out that I have a high level gluten intolerance, and have been advised that I should never again drink Guinness.

It's just like breaking up with your first love, in the knowledge that you will see them every day for the rest of your life, yet knowing that you will never be able to make love.

It's a bit sad, and apart from the pain of the knowledge of eternal separation, the flip side is that I feel incredibly well after years of dull and misty heads and stomach cramps etc.

My dilemma is that I have 5 cans of Guinness in the fridge and don't quite know what to do with them.

I was thinking about putting them on Adverts.ie as a Free Item but that might attract under age drinkers and I'd have to ask for ID etc. Suggestions welcome.

Upon seeing the thread title, thought it was a new brand of Guinness...devastated after reading that first post; and not for the interest of the user.

Drink them and go to a boardsie wedding. Let nature take it's course.

Seems to be the done thing.

Look for a second opinion. You can't be expected to just stop drinking Guinness, it's not on.

OP, does Guinness give you the trots?

No seriously, its just not worth it. I wouldn't be able to function for the next 24 hours. But very willing to try out gluten free stouts if anyone can make recommendations.

On the serious side, I think I've been wheat/gluten intolerant for years without knowing, I feel tremendous now.

So if anyone is suffering from feeling crap, tired, misty head etc after eating pasta and the like, its worth considering if you have a wheat/gluten intolerance.

Is there something wrong with just keeping them in the fridge for when visitors call over  what am I missing? Is it that you want to do something special with the last cans of it you ever bought for yourself? Ever? For the rest of your life? Forever? (Not to rub it in or anything)

Drink em OP. Then drink another 5 on top of them.

You don't have to give up drinking Guinness, just drink enough every time so that you don't notice the intolerance symptoms due to the manky hangover.

Anything with gluten, wheat, cereal oats, gave me dodgy stomach Mr Beesley.

Apparently there was (allegedly) some genetic modification of wheat grain circa the 1970s, so that it grew taller and could be harvested easier, and that's where the nastiness lies. But I obviously cannot confirm that as fact.

Strangely enough, I have a friend called Arthur, but he's nobility of course.

Open them all and pour every last drop down the sink, all whilst weeping tears of bitter regret that you and your true first love shall never be together again.

    Yeah, that'd work...

Says it serves 6 and its 1 can needed per pie. If he's been drinking Guinness for this long after years of suffering, I'm sure you'll be grand after a slice of pie.

Or he could just always give the pie to his family or whatever, rather than eat it himself.

Were you diagnosed by a Doctor with Coeliac disease or gluten sensitivity, or by the lady behind the counter in the herbal alt med healthfood shop??

Gluten Intolerance is merely the latest fad excuse and diet that people latch onto to explain some of their health issues.

ie. If your GP told you to lay off the gluten then its no Guinness for you. If it was the lady in the health food shop or your girlfriends sister who is a reflexologist homeopath acupuncturist woo merchant who diagnosed your gluten intolerance than imbibe that Guinness without fear my friend.

Without going into my own personal circumstances, I would agree with you on that. As a separate issue, there's no harm in monitoring the amount of processed foods we eat. But yes, very valid point you make.

Yep, recent studies have shown that with the exception of celiacs, it's probable there's no such thing as gluten intolerance.

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/rosspomeroy/2014/05/15/non-celiac-gluten-sensitivity-may-not-exist/

People who have a "gluten intolerance" are just eating lots of starchy foods and feeling stuffed.

So OP the good news is that if you eat a bit more fruit, veg and meat and eat less starchy foods, you may be able to drink guiness again. Or your celiac and in that case, sorry. Hope you like cider.

btw, I used to drink it and have only just got back into it. I've turned into one of those people who say "Let's go to a different put, they don't have nice guinness in there" :)

Definitely. Theres no doubt that eating excessive amounts of starchy food is not good for you or too many processed foods or ready meals or takeaways etc Everything in moderation is a good maxim to live by. Too much white bread and pasta and rice BAD. Too many takeways and microwave dinners BAD. But equally, Too much red meat even if its organic BAD, Too much fruit BAD.

I'm always sceptical about any health/diet advice that tells you to completely cut out any particular food or food group.
