Transferring contacts from an old iPhone to new on an old OS X?

Got a bit of an issue I can't get my head around.

My OH and I both got new iPhones. I'm running Mavericks on a 2012 MBP, she's running 10.5 or 10.6 on a 2008 MB, and she wants to transfer her contacts from her ancient iPhone (from 2009) to her new one.

Problem is she'd have to upgrade her OS to allow the new iPhone to talk to her Mac, and this can't be done right now because she uses software that wouldn't run with new versions.

How else can those contacts be transferred?

Would a quick fix be to sync her old phone with my MBP and then transfer those contacts to her new phone? And can this be done in a way that doesn't mix up her phonebook with my actual phonebook?

iCloud account sync or..
Does she have a google account, she could sync her contacts there, then it only a matter of signing in again on the new device and syncing with google,

There are several apps which will do ths.
Search for my contacts backup
