HTTPS Showstopper issue with Magento running on Blacknight Hosting

    Hello All,

I have searched everywhere for an answer to this with no avail. The issue is relating to babydub.ie and is when switching to to secure mode (i.e. https) there is something going wrong in that the script, css and some other files are not using the https address. What this means is that on some pages scripts etc are not loading and on Cart and Account pages they are not loading at all with a 'This webpage has a redirect loop'.

I really do not think there is an error in my code as Magento is an out of the box ecommerce solution and I am not seeing the problem with other host providers. I did however find a similar problem with Blacknight by a few users from two years ago but unfortunately did not have any solutions.

There are hosting providers that mention the fact that they do not have 'redirect issues' with Magento and I do not want to have to move from Blacknight so hopefully someone can sort this one.

I am on a shared hosting plan with a Blacknight supplied SSL and an exclusive IP. Also the https folder is symlinked and I have double checked all Magento settings.

If you need any more info just ask as I really need to sort this one.

    Thanks in Advance

    Toose

They told me it was not possible to use SLL with a shared hosting plan, as the cert is common for the whole server.
If you use https for any Blacknight shared site the user will be defected to holding page which looks very unprofessional.

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?

You can, you just need to pay an additional fee for an static IP (+ €25.99 I think). Rgds Toose

I have already asked support if there was a way to stop https://www.[sharedhostingDomain.123] being directed to a generic blacknight holding page and the answer was no.

Got this sorted and I am sure it will help anyone with SSL and Magento, Guy called Tony in Blacknight sorted me .. Thanks See below for my fix

[ Please read in full ]
After investigation it seems that you will need to run your Webspace, for the domain name, in Apache mode (as opposed to CGI mode).
The reasoning for this is that there are Server Environment variables required for Magento to detect that the request is via 'https', these environment variables are not present in CGI mode - this is a technical restriction on the CGI implementation. CMS systems, and Magento etc., will soon need to update their core code to reflect usage in CGI mode (as it is becoming more common).
You can change the running mode of the Webspace by following these steps:
    • Click Websites (Menu).
    • Click the Domain Name.
    • Click Website Configuration.
    • Click Edit.
    • Beside 'PHP implementation' choose 'Shared hosting PHP 5 (Apache module) (5.3.3)'.
    • Click Submit.
    [*]

Please also note that when running in Apache mode you will need to set any folders/files that require write permission, by the website/Webspace, have the following permissions set respectively 777/666.

    Hi Toosey,

Yes using apache mode will resolve the issue, Magento are aware of the issue but don't have a resolution and while apache mode is an option on our current hosting, it is not an option on our new Next Generation hosting platform.
