Best doctor to see for anxiety

    Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone knows of a good doctor to see about generalized anxiety disorder/panic attacks. I've been going to The Keogh Practice for years now but I don't think any of the doctors in there have any special interest in mental health. I suffer very badly from anxiety/panic attacks to the point that I dropped out of college because of it. Everytime I go in there they either fob it off and tell me to just practice breathing exercises (which I do) or they give me Inderall which has made me faint on two occasions. I'm really just looking for a doctor that can genuinely help me with it long term instead of just sounding like they don't really care and just want me out the door.

    Any help appreciated.

Ever thought about acupuncture? I can vouch for it working v well for exactly that. Dave Hackett in the williamstown centre works wonders.

I tried acupuncture for a couple of things after being recommended by friends. It was a complete waste of time. I'm pretty sure it has become a placebo for people tbh.

We attend Waterford Health Park, and as far as I am aware Dr. Mark Rowe has a strong interest in this area. On a general GP level I can certainly vouch for him, he is a very good doctor. Maybe give him a try....

Mark Rowe is not actually seeing patients that much any more as far as I'm aware.
Im afraid I cant really offer much advice other than that. Im in a bit of a situation as regards a GP over the last few months myself, at the moment I'm attending the new surgery at Farran Park and both the Doctors there are good.

My boyfriend swears by Mark Rowe but as far as I'm aware it's very hard to get an appointment with him and he's not there that often anymore unfortunately :(

Dr Sean Mc Brinn of Waterford Medical Center is very good.

My dad used to go to Mark Rowe but now goes to Dr Paul Campbell and likes him. For anxiety you really need someone who can listen more than anything else.

AFAIK, Mark Rowe is on sabbatical, writing a book.

    Hi Kizzles,
maybe you have found some one at this stage. If not would you consider seeing a counsellor who specialises in cognitive behaviour therapy.(CBT) Research shows this really works in anxiety/panic attacks.
Don't know any in waterford but the moderator recommends a free online CBT service so google boards to find the post.

    Better still, find a psychologist.

yes, psychologists can be good, but just make sure they are a counselling psychologist rather than say an educational or occupational psychologist and have training in CBT.
The hourly rate also tend to be more expensive that that for counsellors who should be members of a recognised professional association should as IACP or IAHIP.

I use a physical relaxation video which I find quite helpful.
