Hi folks, I was out a few weeks ago shooting a few rabbits for a lad I know when I came across four deer. Now one of the deer had an ear tag which I could see clearly... I was just wondering could anyone fill me in on this... as in are they farmed deer that got out or is it something else that im missing? Just curious thanks

Id take a guess at either of 2
    1)farmed deer that was releases/escaped
2)deer that was caught and released with a tag for scientific research

I might be a bit off topic, but if someone was tagging deer or any other animal for research, would they need a special licence/permit?

If it's protected with or without an open season NPWS will be or at least should be in the loop on any trapping or killing for research purposes certainly in the closed season.

It's different if for example a scheme is ran in conjunction with the likes of the NARGC for example when certain parts of animals shot in season are requested as research material. No special licence outside a gun and/or deer licence would be required for killing the animal as it's in season anyway.

If this was in the Co Kerry/ West Cork area NPWS have tagged Red calf's in the national park around 2009, some have travelled long distances over the years, the tags are shapes and colour rather than numbers.

So if you could see what kind of tag it is, that might answer the question....
