Hi, I wonder could someone give me some advice or information. I am going back to college this September, I am a mature student but I am classed as depended as I still live at home at the young age of 32 :(

Basically I live with my father in the family home, My mother and father are not living together for the past few years. My father works full time and he has a side job that's self employed. He has no contact with my mother she lives on her own.

I have applied to SUSI and they sent document requests etc, they want p60 for my father and self assessment for 2013. He got the self assessment from revenue, problem is it shows my mothers income on it now as well, as they are not legally separated yet. So The income is well over the limit for SUSI purposes with bpth incomes on it, but they dont live together.

Will SUSI disregard my mothers income and just class my fathers income as he is the one i live with, I sent in bills etc in both names showing different addresses for both etc.

I wonder has anyone any similar situation as to mine or now of anything that could help in my situation, as I am worried I wont get a grant now.

    Thanks :)

    David.

You might not get the grant but you could still qualify for something like the Back to Education allowance if you are unemployed for a certain amount of time. I would then suggest you find a place and use this as your new address. You will then be an independent mature student. Unfortunately that will only count in your second year though.

Thanks for the reply. SUSI told me when I was applying that if my mother didn't live with us that her income would be excluded from the total household income. Totally confused now with susi and the whole system!

Can you do that, move out and claim independent applicant the following year, I though it was once you start your course, that if you are dependent/independent at that particular time you stay that way for the duration of your course?

    See here

If you can get a letter from a solicitor saying they are separated and separate bills then it might suffice

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Thats correct. You cant change your status from dependent to independent unless there is a break in 3 years.

Thanks for the reply, this is what SUSI said to me:

To be assessed on only one of your parent’s income you would have to prove evidence of separation. Both your parents being jointly assessed on the one assessment form contradicts this. Unfortunately you could not use utility bills for evidence of separation as previously advised in this instance. We would require something official.

The reason being is that this does not conclusively prove they are separated as they could simply own two properties.

So if I can get a solicitors letter to state they are not together anymore would this be sufficient?

Hi quick update on my susi application. I got the solicitors letter. My father received a self assessment - chapter 4 of part 41a tca 1997 income tax for year ending 31/12/2013!

Susi are requesting a revenue self assessment statement for 2013, I take it the form above isn't that? How do I go about getting one?

    Thanks
