Job Interviews

Just spreading a few random thoughts.

I did an interview for a role I really want on Friday that went pretty well and I have two roles tomorrow for other jobs, because I think the best way to move job is constantly look as it builds your mentality and confidence.

Two things pop out at me when on the search.

How small, insignificant and shattering the job application process is, sneaking around on your employer, trying to stay motivated, constantly wondering if your going to land that job you want.

Also just how pathetic Recruitment agencies are, they are vultures. I basically try use them and treat them in a way that doesn't give them too much control and allow them to spew their bullsh*t! Its a nuisance that these middle men affect the market so much.

Another thing I'm noticing on this search is the amount of jobs in the market. I was looking 6 months back and it was a real struggle, now I am turning away interviews and loosing track of which jobs I have looked at online already!

Hopefully a sign of things to come.

Where in the country are you, and what's your field?

Just the area I'll be trying to gain experience in very soon. That's encouraging. Though it might be harder if you have no experience like moi.

Do you think it would be easier or harder to get a job if there were no agencies ?

    That's very encouraging.

I'm in the same field, I've only a years account payable experience but just finished an ordinary degree(accounting and finance) part time.

There is a good argument to be made. I think that companies would spend the same expense advertising and maybe creating an extra position for recruitment. I think they could at least show a true representation of the company.

At the very least, industry wide requirements and standards are needed.

I recently moved jobs. I refused to use any agencies and would only apply for jobs directly!

Similar to myself, I was in banking and did an A & F degree. Found it very hard to break in at 27/28. You cant go the traditional grad route. Entry level jobs and build your way up is the only way. There are more jobs around now for defo though.

I think agencies have a place but you have to be aware that they're working for themselves and not for you

Once you remember to treat them as a human jobs board/email forwarding services and try not to depend on them too much you can maximize the value you get out of them

That's my biggest problem. They owe no liability to the person looking for the job, from whom they get paid for placing. Hence they tend not to care what way they are treating jobseekers. I'm ok because I can separate all that and can deal with it, but I know it intimidates and bothers other people.

Not a great process and very geared towards manipulation and abuse.

    They are essentially just salespeople

They'll bulk email a load of people with a role - some will bite and get put forward and then the agent doesn't care which candidate gets the job as long as one of them does. They get their commission either way

Everyone needs to be comfortable with, and aware of that going into it as a candidate

They want the candiate to stay a while in the job to get the commission and if they need a good candiate to get the job in the first place.

I was looking for a job before recruitment agencies became common and think they make things much much easier for candiate's.

It seems a lot of people misunderstand what a RA's role is.

They get paid by a company not the jobseeker. Why would they have any liabilty to the jobseeker :) ?

Thats what I was saying. As they have no liability to the jobseeker, they don't treat them in the proper manner.

I'm not having a go here, Its just a debate that needs to be had in my opinion. I don't think its regulated or filtered properly. God knows what happens to your info and where some jobs are going and why!
