Just got a little 01 micra there over the weekend, it's my first car and I'm still on provisional.

I've been offered a quote of €1200 from boxymo. Now I know that they fit yet box in the car so I'm undecided as to whether I'll go with them yet. Next up is €1800 from Brittons and First Ireland. Just wondering if anyone has any advice? I have rang up practically every company I could find online and these are the best I can get (and I'm okay with them). I just want to be sure whoever I go with is actually decent and I won't have any issues if anything happened. Who would be better, Brittons or First Ireland?

Both are merely Brokers. Find out who the underwriters are.

Others may not agree, but on such a car, I would be just getting the cheapest TPFT cover you can get, I wouldn't be overly concerned with any addons on such a car. Well not if they bumped up the premium to any significant degree.

As said, all the companies you have mentioned are brokers, they are not the insurance underwriters. Find out who underwrites each policy.

These are TPFT quotes except for the Boxymo one which is fully comp. I'll try and find out who the underwriters are, cheers!:)

And also query how much the excess on each policy. Some are known to have crazy excess prices. Worth asking anyway.

The Boxymo excess is €300, other two are €750 :/

Excess doesnt apply to third party claims either way, does it?

If someone claims against your policy you'll have to pay the excess in the case of TPFT policies(or if it burns down/is stolen and you claim).

If your driving alone go for the cheapest policy as effectively your just getting something to show the Gardaí, the insurance company will pay for 3rd parties but can sue you in civil court where they will win. But not sure how driving illegal with a box recording it will affect your next premium.

If your driving accompanied I'd still avoid the monitoring as they do use the device for premium calculations and how do they deal with others driving

Im fairly certain that Boxymo have no idea whether there is a fully licensed driver in the car or not in fairness :p

I'm not planning on driving on my own! Starting my lessons next week and will be going for my test as soon as possible. This car will be used for runs around town and I will be accompanied :) just want to have my own way of practicing outside of lessons!

Do they know who's driving? No point in having a monitor that penalises the OP if they someone borrows their car.

How do you know that their maps and limits are accurate? On my GPS devices it's not accurate enough on a lot of roads, I drove into Newry and had the speed check warning going like mad even though I was at the posted limit.

That's what I'm mainly worried about with Boxymo! I'm wondering if the worry about the box would be worth paying an extra €600 to avoid, but everyone in the family seems to think il crazy to turn down the quote!

I wouldnt put a tracker box in my car if the offered me the policy for free, but each to their own! If youre learning then chances are youre not going to be driving like a nut either way, so it might not be the worst thing for the first year at least.

I doubt it knows who is driving, so if someone borrows the car then they have to be warned to take it easy. I have no idea how accurate it is; I have no direct experience of it.

They have G sensors to monitor hard acceleration, a learner with kangaroo petrol would be trigger it or a panic braking or bad cornering.

For less than €2 a day I don't think I'd like this compared to a normal policy.

I'm leaning away from Boxymo so far anyway, just not gone on the idea of someone watching my every move! Especially since they won't remove the device from the car, so when I go to sell it on it might put off potential buyers! l will probably go with Brittons, my boyfriend was with them for three years and never had any issues.

Im not sure what you mean by this? The device wouldnt be active for the buyer either way, but surely if you change car and wish to retain your Boxymo policy then you would just bring the device with you to the new car?

No they said they leave the device in the car and deactivate it and put a new one in your new car! They don't remove them. I know it would be deactivated but it still might put some people off.

Seems a very odd waste of money. I doubt a buyer would care or even know, but Im sure a mechanic would have no problem removing it either way if you wanted it out of the car.

I got my first insurance quote with Boxymo. They installed the box within an hour, and I even had 2 weeks before the box was installed to drive around (insured) so I got a bit of freedom from it. Every week (mine's on a Friday) you get a text telling you how you're getting on, speeding events etc. At the end of every month you get a score, and this score gives you your bonus kilometers. Last month (my first month of the policy) I went over the speed limit 'moderately' 13 times and got a score of 91 which gave me 260 bonus kms.

I was worried about Boxymo at first thinking I'd feel like I'm being watched all the time etc, but honestly it's not. I actually think it has improved my driving because I'm extra conscious now of my speed and my driving in general. For a year I don't mind having to stick to the speed limits religiously because I'll have a year no claims bonus, a year more of having a full licence and I'll be a year older, so my policy will be lower next year.

I think you'd be crazy not to go with them, they're fine with me and honestly I'd recommend them to any of my friends starting out driving!
