Hey! Hope you're having a good Monday. My race bike is outta commission for a few weeks. I have a Trek mountain bike with front suspension & narrow(ish) wheels. I am going out for 1.5 hour -2.5hr hard spins on my local roads 2-3 times a week..

Any idea: would this maintain my fitness for when i go back to the road bike?

I have a few tough sportives coming up and dont want to lose too much fitnes!!

    Thanks!

    A

If you ever went for a road spin with a strong mtb rider you wouldn't need to ask that.

You may be in better shape at end of a few weeks

Yeah, the bike will be heavier, so you'll probably be pushing that bit harder.

    Thanks for the replies!
Yea, you defo have to push harder on the mountain bike; it is a lot heavier than the race bike, you lose power with the suspension & tyres which dont roll as well..

When the road surface gets rougher you appreciate the suspension and on the downhill it feels very stable...

Doing a combo of cycling the mountain bike and running on alternate days!!

That guy that finished Mick Byrne with 27kph average, wasn't he wearing MAD MTB jersey?

Op, take it as a resistance training. You'll definitely get stronger.

    Thanks Alek!

I remember when I played basketball years ago, a guy on our team, used to wear weights around his ankles for a few days before a game..

Then when he took them off, he was like Michael Jordan..

Hopefully I feel the same in a few of weeks on my racebike!

I'm just back from a month and a half in spain, training solely on a bog standard cube mountain bike. I notice a huge difference in my leg strength and speed, but it of course was harder to maintain my normal road bike speeds! I couldn't see why you would lose any fitness if you sit down and think about the riding you're planning on doing :)
