So my 97 pajero failed the doe, she is full of rust underneath the joys of living by the sea. Have it 6yrs sad to see her go but the question is will I be asked for vat number when trying to tax another or do they bother with this at all. Was never asked with my own 1. Looking at 06 07 pajero 3.2 anything to look out for in these???

the gearbox/xfer box and timing chain can still be an issue even on the current, i've had to replace the gearbox in my 07 (new shape) at 100k (miles) and also had one of the timing chain guides break and drop the chain into the engine which resulted in 2 bent valves and another hefty bill.

its off the road again now due to feck knows what making a funny noise somewhere, but i just don't have the money spare to find out what it is this time. :(

also make sure you've had a good test drive it at speed on a motorway (somewhere you can get to 120km/h) and have a good go in forward and reverse off-road in the various 4WD modes as well before you part with any cash.

Great machines but a service history wouldn't go astray with them due to regular oil changes being important in their old style engine. Check the 4wd engages and disengages properly, (watch for flashing lights) not a hard repair bit pricey if you have to get someone else to do it. Check that it idles smoothly. Rust also seems to be an issue on the shogun (UK equivalent). Clutch is a little soft so check that also. Every vehicle has their own flaws and the pajero isn't bad in comparison to similar.
