Advice on Assault resulting in huge costs

    Hi all, advice needed please.

A member of my family was going through the local park when he saw a friend being beaten up by a group of guys, he went over to get his friend out but another guy, who he knows by sight, boxed him in the mouth twice, and broke his front tooth. There was a big group of people fighting, but he never threw a punch at anyone. The group of guys were from a different town. There were two guards sitting at the top of the park

Today he went to the emergency dentist to try and save his tooth but it is not able to be saved, and is going to cost €2,500.

The family have no money, they have a medical card but that doesn't cover it.

Is there any way of getting the boy who assaulted him to pay for the repair of the damage he did?

    Thanks in advance

Your friend needs to see a solicitor.

If the guy who caused the injury has means to pay, then your friend can take advice about a possible personal injury action.

However, the type of people who go around battering other people may not have any money, and if that is the case, see here: http://www.justice.ie/en/JELR/Pages/Criminal_Injuries_Compensation_Scheme

Thank you very much for the reply, and the link. Good to know that there are possibilities. I'll tell them to contact a solicitor so. Thanks.
