i'm looking to get a towbar for my s40 but don't want to spend a fortune on it. main dealer have previously quoted me more than €500, mccabes seem to charge the same including fitting.

other than ringing around to scrapyards, are there any other options?

I have previously purchased from www.towequipe.co.uk and found them to be quite good. I then got an independent garage to fit the towbar. Their website seems to be down at the moment but I'm sure other dealers on ebay could provide what you need. You could fit it yourself, there isn't a huge amount of labour involved in fitting

Can't remember exactly but I think somewhere between €150-200. I got a quote from the garage first for supply and fit and then fit only. It worked out quite a bit cheaper to buy from that company and then get fitted with garage. Euro was probably stronger against the sterling at the time also!
