£500 =€630 +shipping & you run the risk of it been siezed by customs, as a private buyer you are not permitted to import a scope, it could be siezed or you could be required to pay custom charges at best, & before this starts a big "Well I imported my one " would you be prepared to take the chance.
Why dont you strike a bargin with ur buddy, cash is king & ya surley could strike a deal if he really is a buddy.

There is now law stopping anyone importing rifle scopes. A rifle scope can be bought and imported by anyone be they firearms holders or not. You may run into trouble if the scope projects a lazer but ordinary ones no license no permits needed. If it come from outside the EU you will pay import duty and vat if it comes from inside the EU no vat as you will have already paid it when you paid for it online

500 + 5 postage if you use parcel motel ..
When I put the scope into basket I think it was only 15 to Ireland
Not trying to start an argument but you don't pay customs or tax as you pay tax on scope when you buy it and it's in the Eu
I think your getting mixed up with the U.S
As you said you can get a few euro off second hand but paying 500 used is a bit much
When for an extra 150 euro you have a new one I would rather buy new

no custom charges on uk purchases or even EU ones for that

as a private buyer you are not permitted to import a scope,

    Wildly incorrect.

You can import a scope no problem at all. Anything over 12 x magnification requires an end user license to clear UK regulations. Usually the seller will organise that for you.

Only last week I received my Vortex Viper PST 6-24X50 in the post to my house from Riflecraft.co.uk. They organised everything for me.
