Look up b the specs for your car. Our VW is 5/30 maybe yours is different.

If both oils are fully synthetic 5w 30 how can they be different?!
Is there any reason I couldn't use either in my 04 Accord?

Different manufacturers of require different spec oil, despite them being 5w30 graded.

    Eg: VW require 501/505/507 etc.

If you look at the details on the back they probably give more details like VW 540 00/507 00/503 01 and the same for other manufacturers

I'm due an oil change on my first car and think 5W30 is the right oil (will check later), is the Halfords own brand the same as other "branded" oils of the same spec? Or is it wise not to cheap out?

Their oils are made by Comma.

Just make sure chosen oil meets car manufacturer's spec.

    I have a mk4 golf gti,

    140,000 miles

Always use 5w/30.. Every 5000 miles with VW filter

Going to try the Opel,spec... Its Well beyond warranty at this stage

    What's worst that can happen

Does anybody know would this oil work with a 2001 Nissan Almera?

There's a check the right oil for your car link on their website (on the left of the page!). It links to their UK site, so the reg finder doesn't work. But select your car and away you go.

Apparently the Ford variant does my Avensis vvt-i. Don't know whether to trust it or not.

Have this oil in.my car for the last 10 months or so amd I haven't noticed any change from the Castrol I had used previously. If it meets the spec then go for it IMO. I bought 8 litres. Thanks OP.

    You should be using 5W 40 not 30 in a Mk4 GTi

I used to own a Vectra (i.8 petrol) & used this oil for one oil change.

Only thing I noticed was the low oil light used to illuminate on long motorway runs.
I'm not really sure what the real cause was, oil was not low, was not being burned.
It said it met the GM long life specification.

I'm guessing it's not a great performer when really warmed up.
Never saw the problem with other oils since. Never had a problem with town driving.
    Might be OK for you.

It's usually stated in the maintenance section of the owners manual.

Nice find OP, for those of us still running thirsty old oilburners this helps keep the orange light away :)

10w40 for my almera was also 15 quid. Spot on! Got a few bulbs while I was at it but fitting they were charging 4 quid each, so I just did it meself.

    Nice find. Cheers.

Is there any reason the VW/Audi 5W/30 oil isn't usually discounted when these deals come up?

Probably because they're the most popular variant and so why would they discount them.

My passat uses 5w30 and castrol edge is what is recommended. £40 on amazon.co.uk for 5 liters is a great deal imho, very few left but they also have 4l available for £33. Linky. I know it's not cheap - but it's a lot less than what Halfords want for it. On holidays in Clare this week and for the life of me I couldn't find a motor factors that sold castrol, luckily I had a litre kept in the boot.
