Wipers won't stop

Hi I've a problem with the front wipers, when it is at the setting where is is supposed to be stopped they are still working and the only way I can stop them moving the whole time is to have it at the intermittent setting.

I don't know a whole lot about cars but someone mentioned that the motor that moves the wipers might need to be replaced?

Would this be an expensive fix?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Sounds like a relay problem.

    Rain sensitive?

Some cars have sensors that will turn on the wipers automatically in wet conditions.

    It's a TDI Golf 2004

I had an 02 Polo with the same problem. The actual switch was worn, so sometimes contact would me made even in the off position.
If the Golf has a similar setup (and it is possible), you will need a new wiper switch.
Could be sticky relay as well, or the rest position sensor on the motor doesn't work.
So you're looking at three possible fault points.
The problem is finding the right one, without exchanging all the above.

Thank you for your valuable contribution.

To be fair, "rain sensitive" is hardly an obtuse description.

Some VAG cars may not be built as you'd expect from an automotive electrics point of view.

B6 A4 Audis do not use a switch/relay combination for wiper motor control. The motor is directly controlled by the (?) Central Electrics Module, a unit about the size of a smartphone in the dash directly in front of the driver's knee. There's no relay in place, and no separate fuse either.

I know this only too well as my unit got water damaged and the wipers were misbehaving badly then stopped, and it took a replacement and recoding of this unit to resolve the issue.

    Possible reasons here:
    1) the dead space in the wiper motor gearbox is worn/fouled, and never gets to cut the power as it usually would when returning to the home position.
    2) the stalk having damaged contacts that always request usage of the wipers
    3) something else related to the control module, if applicable.

VCDS / VAG-Com should give a good indication of what's going on.
