Phrases to say in Irish when a foreigner asks.

So many times I've been asked by tourists in Ireland or when I'm traveling to hear some Irish.

Since I didn't actually learn it properly in school my mind usually draws a blank apart from the mandatory "An bhfuil cead agam dul go dtí an leithreas" which I obviously change the meaning of! Lol.

So anyone have any legitimately interesting things to say in Irish to a foreigner as an example of the language.

    Óró, sé do bheatha bhaile
    óró, sé do bheatha bhaile
    óró, sé do bheatha bhaile
    anois ar theacht an tsamhraidh.

Tá Gráinne Mhaol ag teacht thar sáile
    óglaigh armtha léi mar gharda,
Gaeil iad féin is ní Gaill ná Spáinnigh
is cuirfidh siad ruaig ar Ghallaibh.

Probably not the most basic Irish, but easy to learn and the tune being so famous makes it a nice talking point

To complete this discussion go find on the web the presentation on gaelscoil Irish by Breandán Mac Ardghaill. A TED item.

"Error laden pidgin or creative creole - The Irish of the Gaelscoil".

They would have said the same thing about the Irish spoken by many of the Gaelic Leaguers. Dilution & outside influences are inevitable when trying to revive a language. I'm sure there's similar discussions among Hebrew speakers.

OP whilst you don't speak 'irish' you will find that you will be
able to speak 'pseudo irish' perfectly well.
Your years in school will have given you knowledge of the various
sounds, rhythms and cadences that make up irish. You merely vocalise
these confidently and creatively and there you have it. A fluent
    pseudo-irish speaker you will be.
Lots of 'aighs'. That guttural 'ch'/k sound. The v. And lots of 'aighs'

I just tell them that, despite 14 years being taught it, I can't speak any Irish.
