Going the US in a couple of weeks and am wondering if anyone's got advice on car hire...

    • Is it best to book it online before travelling or just hiring on location?
    • Does it make a difference if our pickup point is the airport or a location downtown? (or would that only matter if you didn't book online beforehand and had an agreed price?)
    • Are there discount vouchers or groupons of some sort we could make use of?
I tried having a look at company groupscheme.com discounts, but they weren't really very good and I was able to find cheaper options using skyscanners search. It came to around 125 Euro for 6 days.
I'd heard somewhere before that airport pickup locations charge a premium price because of their location, but then someone else told me that it would be the same prices if you book online through the major hire companies.

No question about it, you'd be far better booking your rental online in advance.

You'll pay less & you'll also have ample time to assess just what it is you're buying in terms of cover & extras etc. If you rock up to the counter on the day, you may well be bombarded with a glut of acronyms by some dude determined to push all manner of superfluous crap your way.

Booking through a European portal should ensure collision damage waiver is included & it's also worth checking the level of third party cover is adequate ($1 million or so).

You do pay a premium for rentals from an Airport location, but the rates remain reasonable and the convenience factor shouldn't be underestimated. One thing to be wary of is the fact lighting isn't great in some of those on-site parking garages - meaning you should examine the vehicle for dents, scrapes & scuffs in even more detail & have any imperfections noted on your rental agreement by a staff member before leaving.

If you let folks know which City you're heading to OP, perhaps someone hereabouts can advise on rentals in that location.

Thank you very much for you input!
Going to Miami for a week or so. Will probably get picked up by friends there who suggested getting rental somewhere else. They said they got rental for something like 60 dollars for 3 days, but I couldn't see a deal as good as that anywhere online. However, a friend here said that if they're US citizens it may be cheaper for them plus they'd have own insurance.
Was just wondering whether may have been worth just driving straight out from the airport since we're arriving in the afternoon and won't be rushing to get to bed or anything.
