Is there anything I can do to upgrade the drivetrain on this bike?

    Hi
I have an old bike (about 10 years old but not antique or anything). The rear cassette has 6 sprockets and three in the front for 18 gears.
Cassettes like that don't seem to be available any more. Also the whole drive train, chain etc. is ready for the bin and it's not safe to cycle it's so rusted.

Is it possible to fit an 8 sprocket cassette to a bike like this, or is the frame too out of date?

I wouldn't know where to start with it although I have built up a standard mountain bike in the past (this is a commuting/road bike). The drop out for the rear derailleur looks really old as well. It doesn't have the little "tail" where the b-tension screw would go on a newer rear-derailleur. It's just like a "tab" that the rear derailleur hangs off.

It has a bit of sentimental value otherwise it would be lobbed in the skip. I was thinking though if I could replace the gears, chain and shifters it would make a new bike.

(I can't post photos as a new user - sorry)

thanks - is it possible to put a shimano 8 speed cassette on a bike like this or would the frame be too narrow?

Not sure, BUT if you do put an 8 speed cassette on, you'll have to change the shifters too. I assume your on a budget, so the cheapest way out would be to change the existing 6 speed for another 6 speed.

As it is, you will need a new cassette, new chain and most likely new cables. whats the rest of the bike like? what bout tyres, brakes etc? are they Ok?

No not on that much of a budget. The reason I wouldn't just get a new bike is it was a gift and it'd be nice just to put better components on it. I wouldn't mind changing out the components bit by bit if it was possible.

The shifters and all of the rest of the bike are just as bad. The shifters haven't worked in years and the brakes levers are plastic and very bad quality.
