Hi.... came back to my car today after some shopping and see this on my rear bumper.

Is this fixable ... in a body shop of course. Would it cost much?? Can't bear to see if every day - it really stands out on a black car.

PS... this is a black VW Beetle 2006

If you paint over that you will see gouges. It needs to be filled and sanded. A halfords rattle can won't fix it.

OP, unless you have experience you could well make it worse. Your options are get the whole bumper painted (probably the 250 price) or just get the corner done (probably the 100 price). Depending on how good you want the result pick one of those. If you plan on keeping the car for a while I'd get the whole lot done.

Yes..... only got the car recently and plan on keeping as daughter loves it (she named driver!). It has a few small scratches / rubs already which are not very visible and a full bumper respray would clean the whole lot up. I would not be capable of doing it myself... just useless at DIY!

Will bring for 2 x quotes on weekend and see what I can get it all done foe. Would be happy to keep it under €250.

Is the air thin that high up on your horse? Last night was the first night I posted a few comments since May so I've no idea what you're on about that I'm always on. If you have a problem with the post report it. Fact remains the tyres are poor and the OP may not know. Anyway, what helpful advice have you given OP other than ranting when you could have reported the post or PM'd me.

Btw if you look to my first post I answered the OPs question and the quote above was me answering someone else.

OP go with MuppetChecks advice above, have it properly repaired or else it'll just look terrible.

I was gonna give my opinion on the OPs issue but your high horse post distracted me. You called the OP up on something that they didn't ask about in the first place.

BTW have a day off is a figure of speech usually reserved for people giving out about something for no valid reason.

Why would I report it all you done was tell some one to change their tyres when in fact it's none of your business. As I said the OP aske for advice about a bumper and you call them up over their choice of tyres...........Why and what does it matter to you what tyres the OP has?

Anyho sorry OP I apologise for detailing your thread, I just got annoyed by the ignorance.

BTW OP your bumper is 100% fixable and it shouldn't cost much more than a couple of hundred euro to fix.

I'll repeat again without any insults or over the top dramatics.

PM me or report it and end posting rants on the thread for everyone's sake.

I'm not ranting just questioning an ignorant post. I won't report anything because I don't need to I don't want to. I don't need to PM you when I can just question your post out in the open. It's all very simple tbh and I don't get how you don't see that your post was ignorant and irrelevant to what the OP asked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,617 ✭✭✭ba_barabus

I'll make this clear, I answered the OPs question and gave extra advice on an obvious point.

I didn't ask for my opinion and posts to be called ignorant yet you felt the need to tell me. In a similar vein I gave OP advice on their tyres.

For the 4th time, if you have ANY issue with a post please report it and STOP CONTINUING to derail the thread.

Slow down there or you might just hurt yourself from the defensive stance your taking you are just as guilty as I for derailing the thread and just one more time for you the OP didn't ask about tyres the question was about a bumper.

As I said it's all so simple yet you can't grasp the ignorance.

I'll let you have the last word as I don't want a mod to come in and lock this thread over us bickering like children so on that note I'll bid you farewell have a good day happy posting. :)

Again sorry OP I hope you sort the bumper out.

    Drop the tyres discussion thanks.

On topic, no its not a big job - get 2-3 quotes from local bodyshops and see.

That is only a minor cosmetic imperfection.

Would you consider just letting it off for a bit. I'm assuming the daughter is a learner? You may be at risk of more shaves and bumps.

    Hi Masala,

I would recommend that you DONT use an aerosol to touch up the scratches. The off the shelf spray paints in the likes of Halfords will not match properly and it will end up looking worse.

Here is what I have done for something similar and I think it would be a better option if you decide to touch up the area yourself:
    (1) Get a touch up paint kit(the one with the little brushes in the containers). You should be able to get one to match in Halfords, if not try a local VW dealer. There should be two containers included : basecoat and clear lacquer.
    (2) Wash surrounding area with warm water and a small amount of washing up liquid.
    (3) Use tar spot remover to ensure there is no tar or other contamination in the area.
    (4) Wash again and rinse
    (5) This is the boring part:
    - paint each of the scratches using the base coat, just enough to cover the scratches.
    - wait as per the instructions (usually about 10 min) and the paint on the clear laquer.
    (6) You will now have the color back but the finish will look rough as its almost impossible to get a good finish with a brush, but be patient.
    (7) Wait a couple of weeks for the paint to cure well.
    (8) Get some 600 and 1200 grit wet and dry paper and a large white pencil eraser to use a sanding block.
    (9) Carefully rub down the area with the 600 grit and then finish with the 1200 grit, but only enough to remove the rough look. Too much and you will rub through the surrounding paint. Use some warm water with a tiny amount of wash up liquid and clean the paper in it as you use it. If the paint you applied is nearly flush with the surrounding area, don't bother with the 600 grit.
    (10) After it has dried, use a mild scratch remover such as Meguiars Scratch X and the give it a good coat of wax and polish off. You may need to use the scratch remover a couple of times to get the gloss back in the paint.

It wont be perfect, but alot better than what is there and your eye won't be drawn to it anymore. As it's local to the scratches, it won't have any impact if you decide to get the bumper resprayed at a later date.
