    Hi everyone,

    I have a question...
I have been traveling and living abroad for some years and a member of my family has a car I can borrow while I'm over. I will be staying for a few weeks and have looked at a few options for insurance.

I remember a clause in car insurance that goes along these lines... Once given permission a licensed person could drive the car, I think in this case they had to have insurance in their own name on another car. Does anyone know is this correct? Does this work across Europe, as my insured car is in another country?

No short tem car insurance available I think.
I looked at being added as a name driver but I will only do that if necessary, added cost is 150+

Other ideas? Any feedback on clements.com?
    Thanks

If you mean driving an Irish car, insured with Open Drive in Ireland, you can drive it under their insurance provided you fit the age criteria (i.e. likely to be between 25-70) and have a full licence recognised by the Irish licencing authorities

    Yes, thank you!
After looking into open drive, that is what I was referring to. So in that case I would be driving under my insurance an additional car without transferring or any additional costs. I think I will contact my insurance company to make sure but I do remember seeing this in my policy. I have a green card, I am in the age group required and I have a clean license. I also have fully comp insurance.

I will get back to let you know if this applies across Europe on my insurance (direct line).

    Thanks again!

Open Drive is on the car itself. To drive under your own policy you need Driving Other Cars cover and you will need to check with your own insurers to see if it covers you in Ireland

Open drive is nothing to do you with your insurance. In Ireland we take out a policy on the car, and by default only the policy holder is covered to drive the car on that policy. A policy holder can name specific drivers who will also be covered, or in the case of open drive they have open cover for all drivers to drive the car who meet certain criteria (usually full license for x number of years, over 25 years old etc). It is not reliant on these drivers having their own policy.

Open drive however is not an option available to all policy holders; in fact its not all that common that it gets offered to a policy holder. In your case it probably makes more sense for you (and anyone else looking to be covered) to be added to an existing policy on the car as a named driver.
