Can ATC experience be brought around the world?

I want to do either the IAA ATC course or (preferably) the NATS course in the UK to become an Air Traffic Controller. My question is, is the qualification accepted worldwide or does each country tend to train trainees from scratch? i.e. if I did the IAA/NATS course would I have to stay in Ireland/UK to get a job in ATC? (I know you have to work for them for 7 years anyway, or pay money for the training, but that's irrelevant to my question as I want to know could I emigrate AFTER that period and get a job in ATC)

NZ will take you but I imagine you must have good experience. I know an English ATC guy that emigrated to New Zealand and now works the local tower. It was a 6 month conversion period. He was very lucky to get a tower role though, apparently most overseas applicants end up in the main Radar control centre in Christchurch. I'm sure other countries have similar requirements.

Its a highly skilled profession, you can pretty much go to any country you like and ask for a job, with the exception being america as they require you to be a citizen first.

You would have to retrain on the new system/sector/airspace/unit etc. in the new country. but all in all its a highly desirable profession worldwide.

But those of us in the job usually find a good place and stay put. If you are looking to join ATC have a google for eurocontrol, it might be what you are after.
