I recently finished up my old job and started with a new company.
How long does it take for my old company to issue my P45? Basically i want to give my old company fair amount of time to issue the form before i contact them to ask for it again.

Once the payroll is completed for the last pay period you worked, they should be able to provide you with one.

thanks for the super quick response!

I served my last day about 2 weeks ago, and got my last pay one week ago. Is it too early to mail my old office to ask for an update on my p45? I want to be sure they are not dragging their heels.

Id say theres no harm in asking. It could be on someones to do list and they havent got around to it.

They can print it for you now.

Ring them and ask for it.

    Thanks guys.

There's a bit of upheaval in my old company, so no payslips for the past 4 months! I sent them a mail and if its not sorted in the next few days il give them a call.

    Thanks for the help.

My last place made sure I got it on the last day I was working there, ask for it to be made up before your last day.

Hmmm. Are you sure they've been paying the PRSI for the last 4 months when payslips stopped coming? Give the last place another week, then think about contacting revenue.

Hey all. Just to keep this updated for reference.

Contacted my local social welfare office. They seemed completely unfamiliar with the situation. Initially they said they only help out if I needed the P45 to sign on. I directed them to the citizens information site. So now I have to wait for an inspector to come in and review my case to see what needs to be done. Im not hopeful based on the last phone conversation.

So there's two different things going on. The first is just that you haven't received your P45 - Revenue are the people to help out there by giving you a new tax credit cert to give to your new employer. Once you have that it means that you're not stuck for emergency tax (which you would get back at the end of the year if you've been over paying - make a note to yourself to request a P21 balancing statement from Revenue in January - you can do this online).

The Social Welfare only need to get involved in your case if you think the old employer wasn't paying your PRSI. The lack of payslips doesn't necessarily mean he wasn't - they could just be that chaotic/disorganised. The missing PRSI payments aren't an immediate concern as you don't need them this minute, but for peace of mind you'd want to get it sorted. It affects all sorts of things like pension eligibility, unemployment benefit, free dental checkups and things like that, so I wouldn't ignore it, but it's not urgent either. I'd probably have just written to the Dept of Social Protection with my PPS number and asked them to confirm that PRSI payments had been made by company x between dates y and z.

Having gone to the trouble of contacting the local office, I'm surprised that they couldn't just check their systems to see if your PRSI was up to date, but maybe my expectations of working computer systems are too high.

thanks, my mistake for contacting social welfare. I contacted the tax office and they are writing to my previous employer to get the P45. They have advised me to register with my new employer to get a tax credit allocated so i dont go on emergency tax.
