Landlord/letting agent not providing us with key

Hi all, just wondering what I can do here. Last week I moved into a new apartment with my roommate. The letting agent provided us with one key on the day we moved in, saying that the painters that were in that day had the second. We said OK, presuming the cleaners would leave the key behind - they didn't, and on Monday we rang the letting agent to ask for the other key. They informed us that that key was their copy of the key and we'd have to get onto the landlord to cut another key for us - OK, fine.

We did, and he said he'd call over the next day with it. He didn't, and now is not answering his phone or texts and the letting agent is refusing to cut a copy of their key as they need his permission in order to do so. We are two working professionals who work full-time hours and get in at different times - we are getting locked out and tomorrow and this weekend our schedules mean that one person will be in a different county with the key while the other is homeless here in the city! The key is a high security key so we cannot get it cut ourselves.

    What can we do?

In the (very) short term, you could leave it for each other in the postbox, assuming:
    a) There is a separate postbox to which you both have a key,
    b) The one key you have is just for the apartment, not the building door.

Ultimately, you need to keep hassling your landlord/agent. What you've said implies that the painters/third parties have a key to your place. Not acceptable. The agent should give you their copy in the short term, in my opinion.

I've also heard tell of more specialist locksmiths who would cut a security key for you...

Thanks Grolschevik - managed to finally get onto the landlord there and he's promised to sort it this evening. As luck with have it we have no separate postbox and a single key which opens building and apartment door so there are very few workarounds for this. Will update if there any more developments.
