You simply call the national insurance helpline no 0345 600 0643; Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. They would ask you a couple questions like if you are currently resident in the UK (if you are not, they would advise that you call them when you arrive as they don't take applications from abroad).
They would also ask why you want an N.I number and may ask for some passport details. Then they will send you an application form in the post to fill out and after about 4 weeks of processing, you should get your N.I number, kapish.
    Hope that helps :)

Hey, sorry for replying late. I just got my N.I application form in the post today, so wanted to give an accurate reply.
When you do call, they will ask for a UK address, and basic details from your passport. I didn't have to send any proof to them at this time.
When the form is sent out though, there is a section that asks for your national/social security number in the country/(ies) of citizenship.
    Hope that helps :)

Hi andyone, I got one back in 2010.

Basically, I had a job before I had my NI number. So I went to the local Jobcentre near where I worked where they were able to give me a number to call to get it all sorted. You're interviewed but don't worry, it's just a formality. The second post in the thread is also a way to go but the way I did it got me my number faster, as I was in a job already and getting taxed heavily so needed to get it sorted.

You can apply for the number when you have an address in the uk or when you have a job in the uk.
If your planning on emigrating and don't yet have a job, you cannot get a number.
