Self build kitchen cabinets

We need to take out our current kitchen cabinets to do some work on the floor, and there is not much in the budget to rebuild (the current ones wouldn't survive to be reused). We have decided to keep our freestanding appliances, so no built in capabilities needed and not looking to put in anything awkward or unusual.

Any research I've done has thrown up numerous pre-made to order kitchen companies, but the costs for these seem excessive to me. Does anybody anymore just go out and buy some press doors, drawers, lengths of worktop and various bits of timber and fittings and then hire a carpenter to come in for a few days to build the kitchen? Is that more expensive?
Otherwise, any tips on where to buy fairly decent quality pre-made sections that won't cost a fortune and can be fitted by an amateur who is 'reasonably' handy with a hammer and saw?

    Thanks,

Ikea vs the panelling centre. Flatpack, easily assembled & definitely your cheaper option. Look out for deals on doors & drawer fronts for end of line styles. You could get lucky. Only time you will need any assistance is hanging the large upper wall units.

Doors are generally the more expensive of the whole lot, so unless you fancy redoing the whole kitchen why not keep the existing doors you have and paint them or something? Carcasses are inexpensive by comparison and ikea is a good start. They are all standard sizes generally.
