Company losing contract - What next?

A friend of mine works for a security company. This security company is awarded the contract every two years by the owner. The company were informed that they will be losing the contract to another security operator today. My friend took the job on the basis of this sites location. Where does he stand now? Does the incoming security company have to employ him or does he have to get a redundancy from his current employer.

I'm struggling to find any relevant information to pass onto him.

Neither I would say. The new company will gave their own staff and his company may just move him to another job assuming they have other contracts.

He needs to check his contract. Chances are it makes some form of reference to the company's requirement to assign him to customer premises as they see fit.

In general a company can choose to move an employee's place of work as they see fit, but it's a bit of a grey area. Moving from one site in Dublin to another site in Dublin is fine, but if they were to relocate the jobs to Cork then obviously you will have very reasonable grounds on which you would be unable to work at that site.

The established rule is that if the job has been moved to a location which the employee cannot reasonably accommodate, then the company must make them redundant.

In scenarios like this, the outgoing company will often make the staff redundant, and many of them will apply straight to the incoming company.

You can pm me the location if you like, my best friend was in exactly the same situation also security, and his job was transferred to the new company including pay and conditions, with no break in service.
