I picked this up last week, saw the complete thing for €10 on Steam.

Seems fun so far - kind of a mix of Civ and XCom, but I've run into a "there're just too many doods" problem in fighting the last castle in the second map (I know, damn nub).

It seems to have multiplayer though and I've no idea what it's like, so I think I'll have to inspect that - is there anyone else who's played it?

Played the single player for a bit, and enjoyed it. I'm utterly terrible at it though, and find it very tough at times. My strategy of taking my time seems to backfire in these games, as you run into massive armies. Got half way through the 2nd campaign (Necro), before stopping.

Will go back at some stage though, if only to hear some more hilariously bad voice acting :P

Well feck me and call me an apple. Are there actually boardsies who play heroes?!

It's an ancient and awesome pc franchise. VI is actually one of the best ones too. Though heroes 3 was, pretty much my babysitter back in the day, so it has a special place in my heart.

It's a great strategy and rpg mix. It can be extremely overwhelming at times and you will find yourself completely restarting a whole Map, just because you were too passive at the start.

Just a few tips for those who only starting off:

Even if enemy army giving up and running away, still kill them as it's more xp. Xp hoarding for your main hero is your priority.
A good chunk of buildings give bonuses weekly if you visit them. Always pick up a free buff.
Scout out as much as you can! Very very important. There is nothing worse then having your main army working away on one corner and then you see enemy just coming out of the cave to bum rush you from other side of the map
Have a donkey heroes. Heroes who will just pick up stuff for you, so you can use main army and hero to kill stuff and pick up important items. For example: you kill guardians on lumber mill with main hero, but instead of capping, you get your donkey hero to cap it, so you don't waste moves on main hero.
Use a donkey mule hero to bring you reinforcement and take armies back to castle that can be upgraded. At some maps I got a chain of 3 heroes to reinforce my main heroes army each week.

I'm a big fan of the franchise's normal RPG games (one of the first games I ever played was Might & Magic 6: The Mandate of Heaven) but never gave the strategy series a go. Is it like Civ in that there are tiles/hexagons?

To be honest, it's nothing like civ franchise in my eyes. Completely two different type of games. There is no hexagon system. Just watch a few gameplay videos and you will understand m8.

Yea, it's a very different thing to Civ.

I had figured the "Hero Mule" and "Hero Capture" a little later than I should have I think, so looks like a restart of the map is the best way to go. For all the apparent real time elements, this is very much a turn based strategy game though and basic numbers count for a lot in combat. I've managed to amass an army with 120+ crossbows, 150+ Vestrals and 200+ Praetorians, but they go up against about 130% of their number and always loose.
