What makes you buy a car?

Is it the badge? Do you look for performance? Economy? Safety? Does the styling matter? Interior? Build quality? How much it cost?

Basically, what was the biggest and most important factor in buying your current car? A long winded way of asking why did you buy the car you bought, essentially.

My current car cost €400 so that should tell you my main motivation :pac:

But in general, what matters most to me is a good interior. It's where you spend your time and a bad interior will turn me off a car straight away.

Looks and styling are my priorities anyway.

    Do I like the car

    Is it chape

Will it make me laugh when I get behind the wheel

Can I strap a turbo to it without too much internal work :pac:

I'm a barge guy - I love barges. For me, it's comfort, power, reliability and just a dash of looks/prestige. I am however not a believer in spending huge, ridiculous money on a car.

    For me it's:

    Performance
    Handling
    Looks ( I like Blue :p)
    Originality
    Fun
    Safety
    Spec

Not all necessarily in that order, but performance and handling are important to me.

And warranty - As I found out recently!!

I bought my current car because Ive wanted an Integra since I was a kid and it was the first time that I could afford to insure a Type R :pac:

Generally speaking, I look for performance, handling, reliability and comfort in that order. My default is pretty much always to look at Honda! I dont see that changing any time soon tbh.

For me the car has to catch my attention I will then obsess for weeks about it look into it's good points it's bad points then go from there. It usually boils down to looks and styling but if it looks good but has a ****e reputation I wouldn't go near it.

Ah now... how many are going to admit to badge snobbery? I'm looking at you BMW/Audi boys, now.

For me it's all about the drive. Power is the first requirement. My daily drive is 180bhp and is a bit of a sleeper. I hate to put the foot down and nothing happens. Today I'm driving a Citroen Pluriel auto and that is exactly what happens. Thankfully, it's a renty car and I can walk away from it in 10 days time.

Next for me is body shape: a coupe would be my choice of body, but practicality and the need to fit big, and often odd shaped, articles leaves me with a large hatch.

Economy is a bonus but I refuse to do the whole 'chaape tax' sh¡t and I drive a car that requires (and gets) €710 annually in blackmail fees.

    Colour? meh.

Need to impress other people? I never really fit into that mould.

Ability to take a decent amount of neglect and be fine with it, and how many dogs I can fit in the boot. I'm crap at minding my Honda HR-V, but it never complains. Rarely have any problems with it at all. And amazing boot space for the dog (plus guests).

That's not badge snobbery though... it's a religion thing.:D I love 'em too and I'm the farthest from a badge snob as they come.

When I buy a car I want something that isn't a good all rounder. Sounds odd but I would much rather have a car that is very very very good in one area (be it handling, performance, ride quality, reliability, refinement etc) and lacking in others. Cars that are good all rounders are boring and not memorable, they have no character.

Also they have to be in budget :pac:

First thing I do is check the badge at the front - Does it say Honda? Good. I get my money out of my pocket at this point.

Second thing I do is check the badge at the back - Does is say CRX? Good. I then hand over all my money.

Here's how I go about buying a car:

    - I get bored of whatever I have or I want more power

    - What's the most powerful car out there that I can afford

    - Do I like the look of it

    - What other cars are in the same class

    - Want more power

    - Gimme more power

    - Did I mention power???

    - New car in driveway, POOOWEEERRR!!!!!

    - Wallet empty.

    Power

    Handling

    Looks

    Spec

    Rarity

Drivetrain- I go in circles of wanting RWD-4wheel drive-RWD for some reason :L

I've never had a "normal" car (golf,Astra etc) and probably never will so all the badge snobbery stuff has never been a thing for me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,985 ✭✭✭rocky

The whole package, starting with the engine, rwd, size, spec.

lastly how a car looks - don't care.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,237 ✭✭✭kirving

    Safety
    Spec
    Build Quality
    Power
    Comfort
    Looks
    Price

In roughly that order, so I bought an S40.

Now maybe Volvo talk up the safety aspect far too much, since they wouldn't be considered the best in any of the other categories, but I like the ethos that they portray.

Safety comfort reliability in that order
next car for me a SAAB

    Interior/Spec/Toys would be number 1.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,106 ✭✭✭dar83

    Power, handling, engine/sound, looks, interior.

I like something a bit unique and not a rep mobile type of car.

Lowest on my list of cares would be tax cost and fuel costs, which is probably not the smartest move, haha. Bit I'd rather every drive be an experience than a hypermiling challenge.

For me it's not how it looks or built, it's how it makes me feel while I'm driving. Yeah an e39 might go over ramps more smoothly and be better built, but I ain't leaving my busso unless it's for a v8. Likewise my gtv. It's boring driving it on the motorway, so much a so that I'll avoid the motorway to take it on proper driving roads where it comes alive in the bends and very little can keep up with it.

I used to be a fan of reliability, but reliability doesn't put a smile on your face and when you drive for fun you want a big smile. It doesn't necessarily have to be an alfa but find me a car that will make me feel the same way as an alfa and I'll consider it.
