    Hi

I'm in the market for a diesel, hatchback/saloon sized, with a budget of 2/2.5k with NCT. Do you reckon it's possible to find a decent diesel car for such a low budget? or am I just buying scrap...

    All suggestions welcomed

    Thanks

You'd probably be looking at a high miler at that money, unless you steer clear of desirable VW/BMW etc brands.

In the past few months I've picked up a 420k mile Toyota Carina E 2.0D with NCT and a 80k mile Ford Fiesta 1.8D with NCT, both were sub 1k.

You might be a tidy Peugeot 406 on that budget but as said anything really in that price bracket may have fairly hefty mileage or may have a few expensive maintenance bills around the corner.

Rover 75 is another one to look out for, BMW engine but they tend to be overlooked due to Rover's image. Of if you can swallow the higher motor tax then a Volvo S60 D5 is a solid enough car that will happily eat miles.

The Rover 75 used the 116bhp and later 136bhp version of the BMW M47 engine.

Far from Peugeots finest hour  - forget all the issues - but their reputation isn't good.

Someone mentioned the 406 earlier - those are a better bet - the 406 was a superior car to the 307.

2.0 HDi is the best of the HDI engines btw - the 1.6 has a mixed reputation - some - the 1.4s probably a bit underpowered.

Avensis is well worth a look too - and any 1.9 tdi VAG car in good condition and well minded.

What mileage do you do - depending on mileage - there MAY be merit - in considering a petrol car in excellent condition - if a decent diesel can't be found.
