Oil is dripping from the engine.
    Gasket change is needed.
The tutorials give only so much information.
Has anyone on this forum done this before and can you help out a novice?
    Cheers,

    Head gasket.

What do you need to know?
Have you got the head stripped?
I've only done it one before and I said never again

Is the head warped? It may need to be skimmed.
What caused the Head gasket to fail? Important to diagnose the cause of the problem before trying to fix the result.
    Is the radiator OK, waterpump?
Will you be replacing the timing belt or chain at the same time?

Finally are you sure that the gasket is the head gasket and not the rocker cover gasket?

    All the rest is fine.

by the sounds of it no way will you manage this successfully yourself on the cheap.
You need a full set of tools inc torque wrench etc
A cylinder head shrip will be covered in the haynes manual tho if you do attempt it.
at least it was when I done my 98 corsa and I had my dad to help and still never again.

    Only symptom is oil dripping?

Is there oil in the coolant?

    Gases in the exhaust?

Bad stuff on the spark plug?

Powerwash the engine and find the exact source of the oil.

Then post up some pictures of it.

Even a list of tools used would be great help.

More details on the car and a few pics would help a lot.

Seriously if you have to ask these basic questions this job is really not for you.

Have you much experiance building engines because if you do anything wrong while doing this job its going to result in your engine being scrap.

Im not trying to belittle you or anything but i really dont think you realise whats involved in this job its not just a matter of taking the head off and slapping on a new gasket you have to torque it to correct settings, you have to time the engine.

Are you sure its a headgasket what make and model is it year and engine ??

If you've done other work on cars and you already have the basic tools it should be doable once your patient and have a how too of some sort. Post up the make, model year and engine/engine code and someone might be able to sort you out with a factory workshop manual procedure. It's different for every car so specific tools needed and a step by step guide is impossible to give you.

OP it is a very very big job and you will need knowledge of how to do it. Even then it's quite big. Is the cost of repair too much in a garage or local indie?

I had a head gasket problem and it was cheaper to simply change the engine. Still costs quite a bit tho and then paperwork is needed to change the engine number for logbook. Also can be a risk of not knowing about the engine you are buying. But it is an option.

Jebus OP, would you ever just tell us the year, make and model of the car and the engine type? :( so people can give you appropriate advice. You have been asked a few times already at this stage.

Replacing a cylinder head gasket is not a job for a rank amateur by any means.

Tbh and no offence but it's not a job for you.
Even for avid DIYers it's something we'd consider a pro for.

By "it was the oil sensor", do you mean it's not a HG issue but the sensor was involved in the leak?
The better you communicate to us, the easier it is for us to understand what the problem could be.

Again, as everyone else have asked - what model car, what year etc?

It is fixed by a garage now no worries.

I guess we'll never know what car it was :D
