choosing an architect

We have just purchased an old, uninhabited cottage in Co Meath and are starting the process of choosing an architect and applying for planning permission.
We have attended a pre planning clinic and gotten some good information and know that we will need to keep part of the cottage to get planning. We plan to renovate and extend existing cottage to approx 1400 sqft. We also would like the house to be as energy saving as possible.
We are new to all this and trying to do as much research as possible. Has anyone suggestions on how to choose an architect? What sort of questions do we need to ask? We have asked friends etc for recommendations but none of them have built houses recently with the new regs or with energy saving technology.
    Any advice is much appreciated.
