First post here, be gentle. :)

I want to build a supershed/workshop at the end of my garden.

Garden is 7.6m long, 7.1m wide with an adjoining 10m2 patio/decking area. So total area is about 64m2.

The current garden is empty lawn with a small upwards slope to the end, about 20cm over 7m.

The garden is fenced (2004 vintage) on three sides, with concrete supports (~40cm) for the ~1.8m end panel.

My idea is to have built a 7m(W)x1.8m(D) supershed along the full width of the garden against the boundary, leaving existing fences in place.

Although I'm aiming for a structure that is architecturally appealing, I want to limit the profile of this thing so that it sits roughly within the existing lines of my fencing (well under 2m above ground).

So I propose to excavate such that the floor is about 70cm below current ground level. 20cm of this will come from levelling the existing slope, the rest from digging down further.

It will be something like this:

...except on a smaller scale with a little less vertical drop and finished in brick or render, with trellis and pots providing green cover.

Entrance will be on LHS, with steps running down from a new path.

The remainder of the garden will be a mixture of patio and beds.

The bunker will need electricity but not running water/sewerage. I'd like to install a solid fuel stove for warmth/cosiness (I don't plan on working with gas or storing combustible materials) which I assume will require a flue.

I know nothing about construction, but my thoughts are in no particular order:

    1. Planning not required as the area is ~13m2 (<25m2) and leaves ~51m2 (>25m2) of open space.

    2. DPC will be required as it is below ground level.

    3. Retaining wall not required for ~70cm drop, brick/block rear wall will be sufficient.

    4. Mono-pitched roof (slate? green?) ~20° (65cm rise), so front wall ~1.8m, rear wall ~2.45m.

    5. Interior finish will be primitive but must be draft-free. Concrete floor and bare walls is fine.

    Questions:

    A. Am I right in thinking I don't need planning?

    B. It must not be ugly. Do I need an architect?

    C. I don't have time, expertise or patience to manage trades. There's a mix of landscaping, blockwork, windows, roofing, electrical. What sort of contractor should I hire to run the project?

    D. What sort of budget will this take, all in but excluding paving the remainder of the garden.

    E. There is side access. How much width is required to get a digger through?

    Thoughts?
