VRT exemption letter

I went to NCT centre this morning to register and was told that I needed a VRT exemption letter from revenue. Car was imported through Dublin port from the US, I can see a customs stamp from July 1st on 1 of the shipping company documents.
I had completed the transfer of residence form for the shipping company because I lived in the US and owned the bike for more than 6 months. It was submitted at the time of customs clearance.

My question is: Who sends me the Exemption from VRT letter and when do I get it? I called the revenue office number that the NCT centre gave to me and they gave me a number for Dublin port customs, I called the Dublin port customs and they gave me a number for the revenue office. So that was a quick circle back to the same place, with nothing new learned.

Was I too quick in going to the NCT and is the letter of exemption in process/in the post?
Anyone been through the process that can give some insight?

Sounds like Dublin Port Customs fobbed you off.

The Revenue (dublin port) should have asked you to prove you are exempt form the VRT. I think they have list of documents they need. Once you prove to them that you are exempt, they will issue you with the letter.

For the VRT exemption letter, call your local revenue office and make an appointment. I did it in Navan for example. You'll need to bring the transfer of residence form and all sorts of proof that you were living abroad and owned the vehicle longer than 6 months (bank statements, rent contracts, bill of sale etc). They'll post you out the exemption letter once they've reviewed and are satisfied the application.

    From the revenue website:
"Where and when do I apply?

If you are transferring residence from within the EU, you must make an application to your local Revenue Office within seven days of the vehicle arriving in the State.

If you are transferring residence from outside the EU, you must lodge your application when importing the vehicle at the Customs Office at the point of arrival in the State."

So I am covered by the second scenario. The shipping agent had the Transfer of residence form and the all the documents of proof of residence. The agent had to supply the documents to customs to get it through customs. So the application has already been lodged.

The shipping agent said that they do not have the exemption letter. So I assume the customs send it to me, but I would just like some clarification on when and how I get the letter.

Ahh, so I wasn't aware of the difference in EU vs non-EU applications.

Looking at this older post, it seems that it is the Customs office that deal with the whole VRT Exemption letter process:

I got a reply back from Customs through email. The letter will be a computer generated letter and will be posted to my home address.
