Heard a few of these recently - on documenatries mainly and I was wondering why are these being added?

Seems it might be for blind people maybe? But it's tv which is a visual thing primarily.

Am I missing the point somewhere here?

I was with you up to the "Post Production" bit, then you lost me.

Which documentaries? The Attenborough kind of need it, other wise it's just fish swimming about, which is nice and all, but it was also my screen saver for Windows ME.

As in descriptive narration or just a voiceover a la David Attenborough? Late at night you'd often see movies with narration for blind people.

Example - A review of The Ryder Cup (golf). Player takes putt and holes it and crowd go mad.

Voiceover says "He holes 7 foot putt to win the match".

I like when the porn star screams that she wants both her holes filled.

Do you mean he kinda stuff you would hear in 'Come Dine with Me'?

Margery: "I'm just filling the buns with cream'
Narrator: "Margery loves her buns filled with cream"

The thread so far has settled into no coherant pattern. As we observe the ongoing disjointed observations one cannot but be intrigued as to where this is all going. As night descends on Boards.ie we watch now with bated breath for further developments...

    Audio description OP.

May be part of the programme itself or a feature you've enabled on your own hardware.

Definitely an after market ad on, and somewhat annoying too tbh.

I meant to read that in David Attenborough's voice but I some how read it in David Beckham's

Best/worst example of post production voice over is The good the bad and the ugly.
Each of the actors re-recorded their voices after the video element was recorded.
And each did it in their own native language (Italian or English).
The Italian release then had the english voices dubbed in to Italian.
The English release had the italian voices dubbed in to English.
In some cases they changed the script between shooting the video and re-recording the audio.

Think it was the same with Fistfull of dollars and For a few dollars more.

@OP A lot of programs now come with 2 sound tracks, one 'normal', and one with Audio Description or AD. You must have somehow (probably accidentally) selected the AD track on your TV or set-top box. It's actually designed for blind people.

Thanks folks you were right. It was indeed an a/v setting which is now corrected.

This happened to me in a B&B once, it was like watching TV with a boring stranger in the room.
