I don't think so, isn't a charcoal cannister for fuel vapour?

    Is it burning oil ??
there's smoke out the back of it at high idle and it only just had an oil change, before it, it had smoke but not to this extent, the emissions were through the roof on the nct i'm just hoping its burning off the excess unburned fuel in the exhaust, thought the canister might have something to do with it,its not burning oil,not losing any fluids of any form, its just very smokey when revved to sh1t

Those bora engines have a habit of chewing oil seals.

Id say its burning oil what year and engine is it ??

Carbon cannister wont cause emissions to be high i dont think i cant see how it would.

Post up your results give us a better idea whats going on.

    its a 00 1.4 16V petrol engine.

Before the service the nct report showed the results for the high idle, whic was the cars only issue, everything else with it is 110%

    High idle:
    Lambda 1.01. Between 0.97 & 1.03 PASS
    CO 1.92%VOL over .30% fail
    HC 757ppm over 200ppm fail

I have since had a major service done to the car and its only at high revs the smoke appears.prior to the service it didn't,the old plugs were knackered, the oil was as thick as tar,and the air filter was black, changed all that.i'm just hoping the car is trying to clear all the unburned fuel left over in the exhaust system :(
I have a video of the smoke on my phone but it wont allow me to upload it so people can see what I mean by it

Quiet possible your cat is knackered from burning oil and causing those high readings.

half afraid to in case the smoke keeps coming out with the old bill nearby, all I've done since servicing it is revved it to the same rpm the nct tester did but since then its been smoke at the high idle, clogged cat maybe?

No id say its shagged to be honest those engines are notorious for burning oil could be just that now with fresh oil is lighter and its burning more.

Cat wont do much if its burning oil id say your best option is to get someone to look at it and do a proper diagnosis.

My opinion is either valve stem oil seals or piston rings are worn causing it to burn oil which in turn has damaged your cat.

i've been told its definately not my pistons, valve stem seals maybe, how much are they to replace?

Well if someone told you its not your pistons maybe you should ask them what is causing your problem.

If you dont get it diagnosed properly you are just going to put parts onto something in my opinion is going to cost a lot of money to repair.

he's a specialist VW breaker,he said the engine would be down on power if it were the pistons,i've no lack of power so he said it is possibly valve seals
