Hi I was looking to buy a bmw 00 318 , one problem the temp after few minutes is hitting the red. Now the pipe at back of engine has steam coming out of it, the pipe coming from reservoir has no water left in it, starving the engine, is the problem just this "L" pipe, the thermostat or something else, thanks

As you may know cooling systems in old 3 series can be a heartbreaker.
If the car overheats immediately it may have done so many times and caused other issues you can't fix.

Don't buy a car that is displaying some trouble that you don't know immediately what it is or how to fix.
My advice is to keep looking.

It could be lots of things to be honest! If there's steam coming from the back of the engine, then an obvious first step would be to replace the pipe there.

That said, there is no way in hell I would buy a 318 that was overheating into the red, just assume the head is gone in it and walk away. Not worth your time or energy.

These cars are notorious for cooling issues, from expansion tanks cracking, hoses getting old and leaking, waterpumps failing, rads leaking, thermostats failing. I'm slowly DIYing my way through a complete coolant system refresh on my 325, the work isn't too bad, but it can be time consuming and parts aren't necessarily cheap either.
