I've brought home 700ml bottles of whiskey as gifts before in my hand luggage and was wondering if there is a limit on the amount of mls you can bring on or did I just somehow get through security by chance.

You can't take containers over 100ml through security when departing on a flight. You can buy in the airport and bring on flight

As the other poster said you cant take more than 100ml though secuity. If they were however 7 100ml containers you would be ok. If you want to keep this whiskey Id recommend packing it well into a checked in bag. You can buy whiskey if you like in the duty free once you get past security and will be allowed take that onboard

Some airports have agreements between them that if you purchase stuff after security and it's in a sealed marked bag, you can bring it through security at the next airport. You'd have to check what airports you'll be travelling through though.
As others have said if you're just talking about bringing your own stuff through security, you won't be allowed bring anything larger than 100ml in a single container.
I've never heard of airlines having restrictions on amount of duty free alcohol you can bring though as long as it fits into you carry on luggage. The limit is more likely to be imposed by customs at your destination...
