    hi,

i wasn't able to find information on it online, can someone point me in the right direction?
what does it involve to get into the dog support unit?
this may sounds stupid but i would like to only do that, is that even possible?
    i would appreciate any information.

    thanks

You have to spend at least three years on the regular to apply to get into a specialist unit. But even then, especially for something as niche as the dog unit, it's likely to be a few years longer.

    Hiya..
I think there's a small bit about it on youtube if you have a look.

Its pretty hard to get into alright. I know a guy in it and he loves it but its so so hard to get into.
You're relying on people retiring from the unit or moving on and then trying to get in.
Its certainly not impossible just competitive.

You would still need to serve as a garda for a number of years before being able to apply to specialised units.

Best of luck with it all the same.

can you at least do the training courses for the specialised divisions?

Very specialized unit, (as stated a minimum of 3 years service, more likely 5-10 the way things are now and not to put you off but hundreds of people ahead of you would be applying for that job!).
No one 'course' would being you to the level of being competent, as its constant ongoing training with the dogs, week in week out. Its really years and years of work perfecting your skills as a handler. Dog units are involved in searches, drugs, public order/riots and other specialized stuff... Very hard to get into.
I would argue that they need more dog units/patrols

Its more than difficult to get into. It would be better described as almost impossible. I'm in a Garda region which hasn't had a unit since I joined 8 years ago. Not sure it ever had one. We have to beg Customs and other Garda regions.

Don't join the Police if this is the dream. Do something else and volunteer with some agency that deals with dogs would be my advice.
