Beef production: Good use of resources

Regardless of current price fluctuations, has beef production got a future here or anywhere for that matter. From what I've read and see myself, it cannot be described as a good utilisation of resources. The production of chicken and pork would seem to be better at converting to meat. To produce beef, we need manure, grain/nut, silage (alternative energy source) etc etc. Could all this energy be better used in feeding a growing population. Any views?

I think mono farming is the biggest problem

mixed farming has its benefits in that the cattle manure is used to grow grain , straw to bed cattle etc etc

when one is bad the other is good and so forth
