Hi all, I just wanted to write some lines here...

I am currently graduating with 1H from UCC. I know gradireland.com - great website, lots of jobs and I apply every day, however I have received only negative replies so far.

I have put a lot of efforts and finances in my degree, I have always believed that 1H would help me find job easier and faster. It does not look like that at the moment. I feel sad and helpless. :(

OP - I have given you your own thread but please read our charter before you post again here.
PI is for personal issues - it is not for topics or discussions, similarly posting to old threads is a no-no but hijacking threads is not acceptable.

    Thanks

What's your qualification and what area of work are you applying for?
Depends on the sector but with the lack of jobs available even 10 first class honours degrees might be no help in getting work.

My degree is in Business & IT...Like I said earlier - I apply every day, just because there are jobs available in these sectors...

Job searching is tough and especially when you are just out of college. But you just have to try and keep positive and keep going (easier said than done I know).

Have you talked to the careers office in UCC and gotten advice on your CV. Do you tailor your cover letter based on the job spec? Have you put the word out among family and friends that you are looking for work? A lot of jobs are gotten through networking now.

Is it only Grad Ireland you're applying to? Do you have a good, well-polished LinkedIn and is your CV the best it could be?

The hashtag #jobfairy on Twitter is fantastic for hearing about jobs which may not be advertised on sites.

I'm afraid that while a first-class honours is a fantastic achievement, to many employers it doesn't mean a lot. Experience trumps academic achievement every time in my opinion. I know people with 1.1s (I myself got a 2.1) and their job search has been on par with mine. Having a 2.1 certainly made no difference in my job search, and their searches were just as tough as mine.

It is very very tough out there and experience is king. With that in mind, you may need to set your sights to getting a job, any job, with a view to having security and transferable skills within your industry.

Good luck with the search and congrats on the degree!

Getting a 1H will definitely put you in contention for graduate recruitment. With a mixed degree like Business & IT, have you considered contacting the likes of Accenture, Deloitte, IBM and other technology companies to see if they have any internships/last minute graduate spots available?

You might also consider taking your CV to the Careers Office and asking them for feedback on it.

No matter what your results in College you need to ensure that your CV is attractive to potential employers. As suggested already getting someone in the careers office to review your CV and make suggestions on how to improve it is very good suggestion.

I would also customise any responses to positions that you apply for. Find keywords from the job description and ensure that they are reflected and in your CV and application letter. A lot of HR departments will use this as part of the initial filtering process.

If you haven't set up a linkedin profile you need to do so. Anyone looking to get a Job in IT should have one. At worst it should mirror your CV.

I would recommend getting the CV professionally looked at. I did and it changed a lot of things for me. If you want to PM me I can forward a name to you. It is incredible how much the style of CVs has changed.

Have you thought about going on further in your studies, or going abroad?

The PFO letters are really painful to get. I remember sending a CV on a Thursday evening and Monday morning I had the rejection letter in my hand. I knew they hadn't even read the bloody thing. Or worse again, the people who never contact you back.

I think you have more options available to you than you realise. Might also be worth branching out into something entirely different. I know a guy who read for a classics degree in cambridge, he didn't do a thing with it, instead he became a PR consultant. Another was a scientist who became a lawyer. Broadly speaking there is a problem with the Irish university system that teaches you to only go into this one area that you chose when you were 18. Ridiculous.

    Good luck.
